Fangirl, Vol. 1: The Manga by Rainbow Rowell

by 4 Comments

Thank you to the person (I have forgotten your name! Sorry!) that said the Fangirl novel by Rainbow Rowell would work for the cbr16bingo Fanfic category! I knew that I could probably read that as it is a young adult and I like young adult reads, so win-win! However, while looking for it, I found that it comes in a manga format as well. I like graphic novels, but manga is not really my go-to choice. But I want to read more manga and this […]

Runaways Vol 6: Come Away with Me by Rainbow Rowell

Runaways Vol 5: Cannonfodder by Rainbow Rowell

Runaways Vol 4: but you can't hide by Rainbow Rowell

CBR 15, Picture This Look at this cover, how gorgeous is she? (Aside from the fact that she appears to have no ankle or foot). That’s Gert, she’s my favorite. This is a review of the final three volumes of Rainbow Rowell’s run of Runaways. So Runaways is Marvel but mostly the characters did their own thing although some of them have been Young Avengers and Molly is a mutant. There are 100 issues of Runaways, then it got cancelled, for now. I have read […]

Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell

“And you look like a protagonist…You look like the person who wins in the end” ― Rainbow Rowell, Eleanor & Park “What if Park realized that all the things he thought were so mysterious and intriguing about her were actually just … bleak?” ― Rainbow Rowell, Eleanor & Park I picked up this book as I read somewhere that it parallels some plot points with Normal People. I personally did not find many parallels but the number of mentions of this book on this site […]

Simon Snow’s Adventures Come to an End

Wayward Son by Rainbow Rowell

Any Way the Wind Blows by Rainbow Rowell

I didn’t find Wayward Son quite as engaging as Carry On,  possibly because I was already familiar with the world of Simon Snow, or maybe I’m just not a fan of road trip stories. I still enjoyed reading it, and I did eventually feel fully engaged in the novel. It just took a little while for me to get there. The novel is set about a year or so after the events of Carry On. Penny and Baz are finishing up their first year of university, while […]

Chosen Ones and Their Problems

Carry On by Rainbow Rowell

by Leave a Comment

Rainbow Rowell was inspired by her own Simon Snow novel and fanfiction that she created in her novel Fangirl, so she decided to go ahead and turn it into its own book (now a trilogy). Both paying homage to subverting other Chosen One and fantasy novels, as well as fanfiction, Simon Snow is the story of a mage grappling with being the Chosen One while also living his day-to-day life with its attendant relationship dramas. In particular, it is expected that he will save the […]

Scattered Showers by Rainbow Rowell

I’m waiting for Rowell to send another satisfyingly awkward love story (without magic and told mostly with words and not pictures) out into the world. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a fan of the Simon Snow books. I also enjoyed Pumpkinhead even though graphic novels really aren’t my thing. But, I yearn for books like Eleanor and Park and Fangirl and Attachments. So, I attempted to scratch that itch with this set of short stories. I had read a couple of these in other collections […]
