Rhythm and butterflies

A Flicker of Hope: A Story of Migration by Cynthia Harmony

Rhythm by Jackie Azua Kramer

May 31, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Perseverance in an interesting concept. And within the picture books A Flicker of Hope: A Story of Migration and Rhythm, we see two different ways of obtaining that.  Both titles are due mid-February 2024 and were read via an online reader copy. Cynthia Harmony made a book that has the migration of not only monarchs, but people too, in A Flicker of Hope. When Lucia and her father notice that the monarch butterflies are getting ready for their trip North, they know the journey of […]

Why? A Story for Kids Who Have Lost a Parent to Suicide by Melissa Allen Heath

May 11, 2023 by BlackRaven 2 Comments

I am going to say that Why? A Story for Kids Who Have Lost a Parent to Suicide is a terribly sad, but honest, and well-done book. Due in mid-November 2023 anyone who has lost a person to death by suicide should read this. Granted, it might be a bit “touchy feely” but then again it is for kids and not adults. The voice is that of the child and again, honest. They talk about why daddy was sick, that you cannot catch depression (point […]

Moms and Sequels

Busy Betty & the Circus Surprise  by Reese Witherspoon

Because I'm Your Mom by Ahmet Zappa

April 21, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Many times, a sequel does not live up to the first one. And tht is true in movies and books. However, these sequels are good follow ups and stand alone. And while I have not read the prequel to Ahmet Zappa’s reviewed book, I am sure it is similar and does justice to it. Also, both of these books focus on moms and with Mothers Day coming up, you might want to give them a look-see (though the Busy Betty and the Circus Surprises is not […]

Teeming tadpoles

Tadpoles by Matt James

April 18, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I wanted to like the book Tadpoles more than I did. Now, nothing was wrong with Matt James’ book, but it was not grabbing me. That might mean this story about a father and son and the day they spend together when exploring newly formed ponds and tadpoles, is one I need to read again as I missed something (I read too fast, concentrated too hard on text and not the big picture, etc.), or it can mean it is not for me. It is […]

A little girl and a big idea

Jhupli’s Honey Bee Box by Achintyarup Ray

April 5, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

CBR15Passport country (India) With a title like Jhupli’s Honey Bee Box I assumed there would be bees and a honey box. I did not expect tigers. And no, it is not a story where the tigers like honey, but one where they like the people who go into the jungle to harvest the honey. In fact, they like them so much the people never return to the village. Well, there is a twist for ya! Bet you didn’t see that coming either! Joking aside, this […]

How to Sell a Haunted House by Grady Hendrix

March 25, 2023 by Flimflamingo 3 Comments

The thing about Grady Hendrix novels is that I read them without bothering to read the synopses anymore. It is enough for me to see his name on the cover when Quirk Books posts about an upcoming release or I’m on my Netgalley and a new title of his pops up on my available ARCs. To me, he is a known quantity. The books of his I haven’t read are ones that I just haven’t made time for. He is, to me, a guaranteed book […]
