Bingo: And So It Begins, with free running off the rooftops of New York

Discount Armageddon (Incryptid Series Book 1) by Seanan Maguire

August 5, 2019 by sistercoyote Leave a Comment

Verity (“Very”) Price has more going on than you’d think. In addition to working as a waitress at a strip club, subletting semi-legally, preparing for a dance competition, and generally trying to keep a roof over her head (and those of her colony of Aeslin Mice), she’s also responsible for keeping tabs on New York’s cryptid population. Which doesn’t leave her much, if any, time for dating.

Beast In View by Margaret Millar

August 4, 2019 by Jake Leave a Comment

Read as part of CBR11 Bingo: Award winner. This book won the 1957 Edgar Award for best Mystery work. This book edged out Patricia Highsmith’s legendary The Talented Mr. Ripley for the 1957 Edgar Award. Both of them are more psychological thrillers than mysteries. Both were written by world class female crime writers, maybe 1 and 1a of the genre. Yet while Patricia Highsmith’s work has endured (she’s the only woman whose works have been republished by the Everyman’s Library), Millar’s were largely forgotten for decades. This […]

The Game’s Afoot (Bingo)

A Study in Scarlet by Arthur Conan Doyle

August 3, 2019 by Malin Leave a Comment

3.5 stars #CBR11 Book Club: Classics Spoiler Warning! There WILL be mild spoilers for the plot of this story (which is from 1887, so you know, if you wanted to know the details, you’ve had enough time to look them up or just read the damn story). This is also the Cannonball Book Club selection for August, so I’m going to assume that most people who are interested in participating will read the book before then. If, however, you have NOT read the book yet, maybe […]

In the Darkness of the Grave

The Witch Elm by Tana French

August 3, 2019 by Ellesfena 1 Comment

My library has a program where you can borrow popular ebooks with absurdly long waitlists immediately, but you can only keep them 7 days. Luckily, The Witch Elm is the kind of mystery I absolutely tear through because I can’t handle the suspense. Toby Hennessey is the sort of guy who isn’t good at any one thing in particular, but who seems to always coast by and can talk his way out of any situation. After a night out drinking with friends, he’s awakened when […]

Sing!

Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens

August 2, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

Seriously I got nothing to say that probably has not been said by thousands of people before me who finished this fantastic book. Owens hit on something here that I think a lot of readers long for. A very developed character and plot with some mystery elements in it with a totally blindsided ending that I didn’t see coming. I loved this whole thing. I think we will be talking about “Where the Crawdads Sing” for decades. “Where the Crawdads Sing” follows a 6 year […]

Retelling of the 12 Dancing Princesses

House of Salt and Sorrows by Erin A. Craig

August 2, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

Please note that I received this book via NetGalley. This did not affect my rating or review.  So this was really good. I like a good retelling and Craig does a great job with “The Twelve Dancing Princesses” by the Brothers Grimm. We follow the main character Annaleigh who is intent on figuring out if her older sister was murdered. From there we have Craig work in Gothic elements as well as some pretty dark horror elements as well. I loved the world building and would […]

I read them in the late 1980s/early 90s too. They were my first romances.

I really enjoyed this one. I was particularly amused at Lady Catherine deBoutgh’s disgust at her assassin’s incompetence.
