I’m gonna have fun with Hillbilly Elegy, aren’t I?

Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens

December 7, 2020 by octothorp Leave a Comment

The bumpkin made good story seems to be in something of a renaissance right now, and I think I was spoiled by Educated, which was spectacular and non-fiction.  I enjoyed this book, but the fictional aspect took me out of it – there’s too much to make our protagonist saintly and it feels forced.  I also hate hate hate when writers try to imitate patois in their writing. It feels minstrel-y, and doubles down on the fictional remove because I always think “I have never […]

Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens

July 12, 2020 by kniki Leave a Comment

Where the Crawdads Sing follows the life of Kya from the age of around six years old as she learns to look after herself in the wild marshlands of North Carolina.  First her mum goes, leaving Kya to subsist in a shack with her father and siblings.  Then one by one the older brothers and sisters wander off too, and one day a few years later her father stops coming home. Life then for Kya is a mix of loneliness, poverty and joy.  Some townspeople […]

Such a Fun Age, by Kiley Reid This was one I did not want to have to reduce to a catch-up post but here we are, too many books and too little time. Everyone everywhere is raving about Such a Fun Age and for a damn good reason. This is the rare book that is both quality good and can’t-put-it-down good. The story opens with Emira Tucker, part-time nanny to a wealthy family in Philadelphia, helping her employer out in a midnight emergency and taking her […]

Let me start by saying: this is a genuinely wonderful book which you should immediately procure. Then make yourself some strong sweet tea, curl up in your favourite reading spot, and gift yourself a few hours to fall in love with it. I guarantee: it’s worth your time. Where the Crawdads Sing is the debut novel of Delia Owens who, prior to its publication, had published only non-fiction books. It tells the story of Kya, who local townspeople shun and jeer, calling her the ‘Marsh […]

Where The Crawdads Sing

Where The Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens

This book had many fantastic reviews and I was looking forward to reading it as it was the Hello Sunshine Book Club choice for September 2018.  It did not disappoint! I would love to see this made into a movie. This is the story of young Kya,  who grew up in the marsh of North Carolina.  Her mother abandoned her and her siblings when she was very young, and then all her siblings left next.   Her father is an abusive drunk, and is rarely around […]
