Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens

April 27, 2023 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

Kya feels at home in the marshes of South Carolina. She grows up in a shack in the marshes with her parents and siblings. Slowly each member of her family leaves because of her abusive father. Eventually Kya is left alone at about age 9 or 10. She has to learn how to survive, because she doesn’t want to go to a group home in town. The marsh and the beach and the animals have always been there for her. She’s a naturalist and an […]

A story of profound neglect and trauma dressed up as…gumption, I guess?

Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens

I put off reading this book for a long time. I get really skeptical of those summer blockbuster books that everyone just loses their minds over. The only reason I ended up reading this book is because my book club picked it as their July book. For me, this book did not live up to the hype. At all. Caution: all of the spoilers ahead. Kya is the youngest child born into poverty in the North Carolina marsh. Her mother is loving, but struggling with […]

Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens

July 15, 2022 by jeverett15 3 Comments

Starting at age six, Kya Clark’s family members left her behind one by one until she was living in the Carolina marshes all alone. Why did they do this? Well, because Delia Owens needed them to, I suppose. Another good question is how in the heck a child is supposed to get by on her own, to which the answer is apparently by gathering and selling mussels. Eventually, somehow, Kya grows up, learns to read, becomes an expert on the flora and fauna of the […]

Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens

June 19, 2021 by Sophia Leave a Comment

Something drew me to Where the Crawdads Sing (2018) by Delia Owens when I first saw it, but it still took me a while to finally get to reading it. Once I began, I was quickly captivated by the story and finished the book in a couple of days. It wasn’t until the end when I was reading about the author that I discovered I’d actually read three other books by Delia Owens and greatly admire her. I love the outdoors and being in nature, and I […]

Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens

The bumpkin made good story seems to be in something of a renaissance right now, and I think I was spoiled by Educated, which was spectacular and non-fiction.  I enjoyed this book, but the fictional aspect took me out of it – there’s too much to make our protagonist saintly and it feels forced.  I also hate hate hate when writers try to imitate patois in their writing. It feels minstrel-y, and doubles down on the fictional remove because I always think “I have never […]

Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens

July 12, 2020 by kniki Leave a Comment

Where the Crawdads Sing follows the life of Kya from the age of around six years old as she learns to look after herself in the wild marshlands of North Carolina.  First her mum goes, leaving Kya to subsist in a shack with her father and siblings.  Then one by one the older brothers and sisters wander off too, and one day a few years later her father stops coming home. Life then for Kya is a mix of loneliness, poverty and joy.  Some townspeople […]
