Highly enjoyable and very cute

Highly Suspicious and Unfairly Cute by Talia Hibbert

February 2, 2023 by Malin 3 Comments

CBR15 Passport Challenge: Books from different countries (the UK) Celine Bangura and Bradley “Brad” Graeme used to be best friends until Brad callously decided to ditch Celine and get with the popular crowd (this is Celine’s interpretation of past events, anyway). Now, every time they are near each other, they trade insults or compete academically. Their mothers are still best friends, though, which means they keep hearing glowing accounts of any accomplishment the other has achieved. One of Celine’s dreams is to become a lawyer, […]

The holidays are fucking hard

This Winter by Alice Oseman

December 29, 2022 by carmelpie Leave a Comment

“When people know you’re mentally ill, most people either want to ignore it completely or they treat you like your strange, scary, or fascinating. Very few people are actually good at the middle ground. The middle ground isn’t hard. It’s just being there. Being helpful, if help is needed. Being understanding, even if they don’t understand everything.” ― Alice Oseman, This Winter “I think sometimes,’ says Nick, ‘you’re so scared of being a burden that it makes you terrified to ask for help. But you […]

Might not kill you but just might help cure insomnia

This Lie Will Kill You by Chelsea Pitcher

November 24, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

When I was between ages 12 and 15-16, I would have devoured this young adult novel, This Lie Will Kill You by Chelsea Pitcher. It has everything: romance, love triangles, a good bad boy, murder, mayhem, mystery, red herrings, strange person in a mask, and metaphorical masks as friends have secrets. As an adult, I feel that this book was cliched, convoluted, with a too neat ending, and had an obvious twist. The characters were unlikable to my adult-self, but as a teen I would […]

Yes, I Would Like to Move to This Village, Thank You

Little Snow Landscape by Robert Walser

October 20, 2021 by elderberrywine Leave a Comment

Cannonball Bingo – Landscape Robert Walser was a Swiss writer of miniatures, with works dating from 1905 to 1933.  As the title indicates, his earlier pieces are primarily short descriptions of the villages and forests of his youth.  And the man loved to walk.  “The Moon” describes a night stroll as he leaves his village and its Christmas market and climbs up into the forests and mountains.  I wished I could stand in the moonlit night forever and surrender to old dear thoughts, to stay […]

The Marriage Plot - Jeffrey Eugenides

There is no happiness in love, except at the end of an English novel.

The Marriage Plot by Jeffrey Eugenides

March 20, 2017 by Gracey the Giant 4 Comments

My friend M. found the beginning of this book to be quite pretentious. And it is.  It’s pretentious AF for the first 60 or so pages.  And it’s hard to read pretention too.  The first few pages, especially, seem to drag and serve no purpose other than to make you re-think your decision to read it. But, I’m here to tell you that, while the first part of The Marriage Plot is definitely pretentious, it’s pretentious for a reason.  The pretention of Madeline and her […]

I Think Lisa Kleypas was working through some issues

Blue-Eyed Devil and Smooth Talking Stranger by Lisa Kleypas

March 3, 2016 by Emmalita 11 Comments

Lisa Kleypas’ Blue-Eyed Devil and Smooth Talking Stranger are two of my inexplicable comfort reads. They have their good parts and bad parts, but they are not stellar books. I didn’t particularly like either of them when I got them, but I got them both as ebooks, so I have read each of them multiple times, because there they are.  I’m scrolling through my kindle and instead of the many long languishing books I haven’t read, I read these two.  It probably says things about […]
