Gloriously weird

Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll

December 1, 2020 by Wanderlustful Leave a Comment

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland are just as weird as I remembered.  It was also a lot of fun. I had a good memory of the basic story going in: Alice chases a talking white rabbit who is holding a pocket watch and then falls down a rabbit hole; she eats and drinks things that are suspiciously labelled and make her grow larger or smaller; and she meets a cast of weird characters (Cheshire Cat, the Red Queen, a talking caterpillar, a mad hatter). All of […]

When the Sugar Plum Fairy meet Alice (well….not really)

The Nutcracker by E.T.A Hoffmann

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, by Lewis Carroll

August 16, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

#cbr11bingo  #Remix Various publishers have done board books that have a classic theme. They tell you the bare minimal of the story with each one having limited text; yet some have more than others. This series, Penguin Bedtime Classics, seems to be my favorite so far. Or at least the two I have read which are illustrated by Carly Gledhill. The Nutcracker (based on E.T.A Hoffmann’s story) is a simplistic version of the Nutcracker, with details that make it lighthearted and fun. The characters are […]

Why? This Old Thing? Well it’s new to me!

September 4, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is my “This old Thing”   We know the story: A little girl falls down a rabbit hole and discovers a world of nonsensical and amusing characters. We know the controversial story behind Lewis Carroll and the real Alice. We have probably all have seen at least the Disney movie version. I have seen several live action ones (from Ringo Star as the Mock Turtle, Andrew Lee Potts as Hatter, Phillip Winchester as the Knave and of course, ol’ Johnny Depp) […]

FFS WHYYYYYYYYY

January 25, 2017 by alwaysanswerb 7 Comments

Who’s ready for some kvetching? Plot-wise, all you really need to know is that Heartless is the origin story of the Queen of Hearts, of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland. So although you know how it’s going to end, here is a general SPOILER WARNING for the rest of this review, because I don’t want to dance around the details of what bugged me. The very biggest problem is that the heroine, Catherine Pinkteron, is an absolute mess of a character. To a certain extent, […]

Alice in Wonderland Cover

Sheer nonsense by Lewis Carroll. Off with his head!

April 22, 2014 by AamilTheCamel Leave a Comment

Twenty-first book reviewed as part of the 130 Challenge. Where do I even begin? I think I’ll begin with how I went about reading this book. Well, I didn’t read it, I listened to it and what an absolutely enthralling experience it was! I know I had decided not to do audiobooks anymore, but I listened to the version by Eric Leach on LibriVox and it was the best thing ever! He’s done various accents and voices and tones and emotions and has enacted the […]
