Life, love and rock climbing

Kirby's Lessons for Falling [in Love] by Laura Gao

May 15, 2026 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Kirby’s Lessons for Falling [in Love] was neither loved nor hated. I mean, Laura Gao did a lovely job of story, text and art, but at the same time, I was thinking, “Something is missing.” It moved quickly, has some new takes on familiar themes, and for the most part I like how things turned out. Yet, giving it a score is hard as I loved most of it, but there were places I did not. Probably why I am having trouble figuring out a […]

Happy Pride to all who celebrate! The First Quarry**** I was disappointed in the quality of the last couple of Quarry novels so I wasn’t expecting much…but this was good. One of his best plots and I really enjoyed it. Could’ve done without the racism. Big believer that you can show the casual racism of the past (1970s) without wallowing in it and the book does that. Otherwise, it’s good. Kings of the Garden: The New York Knicks and Their City**** Stretching a four star […]

The Perfect Astrology 101 Course

You Were Born For This: Astrology for Radical Self-Acceptance by Chani Nicholas

January 14, 2020 by randirock 2 Comments

I bought this book, because Chani Nicholas is amazing. I loved this book, because Chani Nicholas is amazing. So many poo-poo astrology. I used to be one of those people. Three-ish years ago, I began venturing into spirituality, something I had hidden away for over a decade due to terrible experiences with the Catholic Church and scrupulosity (Another story for another day.)  With this journey, I discovered the true nature of astrology – not the boiled-down, pop culture fluff – rather, a tool for self-reflection […]

A 16th Century Tudor Thriller

May 15, 2014 by Valyruh Leave a Comment

Prophecy is the second of a trilogy of historical fiction novels that take place in Elizabeth I’s England, where the so-called “art of diplomacy” is but a thin veneer for a war of intelligence over which empire—French, English, Spanish– will reign in Europe and beyond. The year is 1583, and the Italian philosopher/mathematician/astrologer/poet and former Dominican monk Giordano Bruno has fled the Catholic Inquisition in his homeland and settled in the “relatively more enlightened” city of London, where he lives in the home of the […]

Monks and Spies in Tudor England

May 7, 2014 by Valyruh Leave a Comment

Okay, I’ll confess I read this trilogy out of order, and–worse–I reviewed them out of order, but I still highly recommend them if, like me, you’re an afficionado of good historical mysteries. Even more so since I just learned that this “trilogy” is about to have a sequel. Anyway… In this third novel, it is now 1584 and our hero Giordano Bruno is being stalked by someone through the streets of London. He has made a lot of enemies in Parris’ previous two books, and […]

It is a great quote that says a lot about the Murderbot/ART relationship and the series as a whole.
