Don’t judge a book by its cover

Griz by Eddie Cleveland

November 9, 2020 by katie71483 3 Comments

I’ll be the first to admit guilt: I had zero expectations about this book. The blurb sounded mildly entertaining, a comedic fake relationship romance with a college hockey backdrop. Strike that. I had low expectations. I totally judged GRIZ by E. Cleveland by two things that really shouldn’t have any bearing on the quality of a book: the title, the cover and the fact that it was a Kindle Unlimited selection. Okay, that was three things, but bear with me here. Griz is the name […]

This series is like the ideal fantasy college experience. Acceptance and friends and lots of pies.

Check, Please!, Book 2: Sticks & Scones by Ngozi Ukazu

July 6, 2020 by narfna Leave a Comment

Again, read this in April, don’t remember as well as I should. PSA: Always write your reviews within a week of finishing the book! It doesn’t end well otherwise! (Writing this mostly for future Ashley, who insists on being a total asshole in this regard.) It was cute! I remember that. Bitty and the other hockey bros are a good bunch of people to hang out with for an hour or two (these are very fast reads). And this one, if I’m remembering correctly, had […]

Worst Plot Structure Ever

Win Big by Kelly Jamieson

January 13, 2020 by NoNeinNyet Leave a Comment

This book was disappointing. Normally the fake relationship trope is one of my favorites but it was like Kelly Jamieson chose the exact wrong parts of the plot and character development to slow roll in Win Big. This is the third in her Wynn hockey series, a spin-off from her Chicago Aces series. I hold Jamieson to a lower bar than Sarina Bowen when it comes to hockey romance and this book proves why. I say this even knowing Bowen has a couple of not-great […]

A passionate author can make all the difference

Check, Please! Book 1 #Hockey by Ngozi Ukazu

October 29, 2019 by crystalclear Leave a Comment

I had seen this floating around, but it wasn’t until I saw Ngozi Ukazu speak at the NYPL professional day at New York Comic Con this year that I really wanted to read it.  I had seen the cover and thought, “Oh, hockey, not really for me,” and passed it by. But seeing Ukazu speak so passionately about her work inspired me to seek it out. (Fun fact – my public library where I work did not have it, but the high school where I […]

Um…Hockey?

Amazons: An Intimate Memoir by the First Woman Ever to Play in the National Hockey League by "Cleo Birdwell" (Don DeLillo)

July 27, 2019 by Jake Leave a Comment

Well then. I’ve wanted to read this book for a long time and I’ve tried many times. I’m a diehard New York Rangers fan and I thought a fictional take on what it would be like to be a female Ranger would be a blast. But after 10 pages, I soon realize that’s not what “Cleo Birdwell” (aka Don DeLillo) is going for here. This book is really about sex. Lots and lots of sex. Sexual exploration, etc. Which is fine. I’m not a prude. […]

Time to move Sarina Bowen back on hiatus

Pipe Dreams by Sarina Bowen

February 5, 2019 by Malin 2 Comments

Lauren Williams used to love hockey, but after Brooklyn Bruisers goalie Mike Beacon suddenly dumped her without warning, she stays far away from the game, and is very grateful that her boss, Nate Kattenberger, has her running his office in Manhattan, so she can focus on moving on and building a life for herself on her own. She’s about to graduate from college, with a lot of bright career prospects in her future and she’s planning on having a baby, by herself. She’s none too […]

I felt the same way. Interesting concept, but the execution was lacking.

on Sometimes, a book cover promises cats and lies. This book, on the other hand, delivers in spades. SO many cats, guys.
