My first review of the year!

Brooklynaire by Sarina Bowen

January 22, 2019 by Malin 7 Comments

3.5 stars Rebecca “Becca” Rowley has worked for tech billionaire Nate Kattenberger for more than seven years. She managed his office while he and a few friends were still an optimistic start up. For the last few years, she’s gone from being his personal assistant to managing the hockey team he bought, the Brooklyn Bruisers. Foolishly walking onto the ice to personally deliver a message, Rebecca falls and gets a concussion. Several weeks later, she’s still not well and fretting terribly about her inability to […]

A book that I purchased solely based on judging it’s cover.

July 17, 2017 by kella 3 Comments

I’m so stereotypically Canadian, that I picked this up because of the hockey game on the cover.  True story.  #sorrynotsorry Beartown is a small rural village (in what I’m assuming is Sweden, although I don’t think it ever specified) that is slowly dying.  Their only hope for economic revival is their junior hockey team – a championship win will secure them as the site for a new elite hockey academy which will bring people and businesses back to the area. But before that final game, […]

Middling

This is a hard book to review.  The reading experience itself was pretty enjoyable, but I had a lot of problems with the story, so it gets a mixed review. I was pleasantly surprised by this book.  Why?  Because I had SUPER low expectations for it.  But, it’s an offshoot of the stories about my #1 favorite romance couple (from Him and Us), and it includes the scene of their wedding, so it was a given that I would have to read it.  Yes, there […]

Solid, Mediocre Sports Romance

January 12, 2017 by Ellepkay 4 Comments

This is the first book in the Brooklyn Bruisers series, and came out Fall 2016.  Bowen has stuck with hockey, but moved on to the NHL from college stories.  I never finished the Ivy Years series, but apparently this hero is the older brother of the hero in The Fifteenth Minute (which I will NEVER read based on the reviews and BethEllen’s warnings). Georgia Worthington is the interim PR head for the Brooklyn Bruisers, an NHL team.  On the same day that it is announced […]

Realistic (and slightly depressing) Hockey Romance

August 2, 2016 by Ellepkay 1 Comment

This is the second book in this series.  I liked the first one, but said that I wouldn’t seek out the others – except this one went on sale for $1, and that was good enough for me!  The big conflict in this one is probably the most realistic I have come across in a contemporary romance.  There’s no high drama or tragic backstory, just two people who connect, but are not sure how to make a relationship work. Scott Walters is a hockey player […]

How are all these sports romances so hot when I don’t care even a little bit about sports?

May 6, 2016 by Malin 7 Comments

4.5 stars Summary from Goodreads: They don’t play for the same team? Or do they? Jamie Canning has never been able to figure out how he lost his closest friend. Four years ago, his tattooed, wise-cracking, rule-breaking roommate cut him off without an explanation. So what if things got a little weird on the last night of hockey camp the summer they were eighteen? It was just a little drunken foolishness. Nobody died.  Ryan Wesley’s biggest regret is coaxing his very straight friend into a […]

I felt the same way. Interesting concept, but the execution was lacking.

on Sometimes, a book cover promises cats and lies. This book, on the other hand, delivers in spades. SO many cats, guys.
