THIS is how you win a Pulitzer Prize…

The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt

January 6, 2020 by kella 3 Comments

When I picked up this book, after randomly seeing it in photos of favourite books over the past couple years, I was intrigued by the seal indicating its award winning status. I’ve never been a person who is super intentional about the prestige of literary awards, and as I cracked this hefty book open, I remember wondering if I would be able to actually read a difference… if I would notice something in the style of writing that sets this apart from others (something other […]

So. Much. Drowning.

Into The Water by Paula Hawkins

December 30, 2019 by kella Leave a Comment

I felt just ok about Hawkins’ The Girl on the Train, so I expected similar results from this book. I think my low expectations helped me enjoy this more than I thought I would (not MUCH more, but still, every little bit counts?). Into The Water is set in a small town in England that is home to the Drowning Pool, a section of river that has seen the deaths of many women over the years – some by murder, some by suicide. The story […]

A slow read in a slow week…

A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles

December 30, 2019 by kella Leave a Comment

This book was absolutely perfect for a post-Christmas rush day of doing literally nothing but reading. It’s based in Russia, spanning the 1920s-50s and takes place primarily inside a luxury hotel. The protagonist, Count Alexander Rostov, has been living there for some time, but after being tried by the state on the heels of the Bolshevik revolution (for writing some questionable poetry), he is sentenced to house arrest in that same hotel for the rest of his life. He is stripped of the suite befitting […]

Merry Christmas, here’s a book about cancer.

Daughter of Family G by Ami McKay

December 23, 2019 by kella Leave a Comment

At a recent Christmas party, a few friends did a ‘white elephant’ gift exchange, but with books. This was the book I walked away with, and I initially wasn’t sure how to feel about it. A memoir about hereditary cancer didn’t seem like something I’d normally get into over the holidays, but it came with rave reviews and the fact that it was penned by Ami McKay was enough to at least crack the first chapter. … and then I couldn’t put it down. McKay […]

Christmas Cannonball!!!

The Best Christmas Pageant Ever by Barbara Robinson

December 18, 2019 by kella 6 Comments

This is one of the only books that I re-read every year. It’s not December or Christmas until I sit down and read through this little book – and I still have the battered copy that I received as a gift in elementary school… 30ish years ago. It’s the story of a small town cookie-cutter, same-every-year, church Christmas pageant. The same sweet and innocent girl plays Mary every year, there are the shepherds in bathrobes, toddler angels, and traditional carols. But this year, the Herdman […]

Why do people keep ruining this book?

Pride and Prejudice and Mistletoe by Melissa De La Cruz

December 18, 2019 by kella 3 Comments

If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a million times, I LOVE Pride and Prejudice. It’s one of my all time faves, and I’m a sucker for reboots and any manner of variations….. as long as they’re good. This was… not. This modern ‘retelling’ centres on Darcy Fitzwilliam who returns to her hometown of Pemberly, OH over Christmas after her mom experiences some health problems. She has been largely estranged from most of her family, and hasn’t been home in years. She runs into Luke […]
