Sarah J. Maas – now with a whole lot of supernatural creatures and more swearing

House of Earth and Blood by Sarah J. Maas

July 8, 2020 by Malin Leave a Comment

#CBR12 Bingo: Red Official book description: Half-Fae, half-human Bryce Quinlan loves her life. By day, she works for an antiquities dealer, selling barely legal magical artifacts, and by night, she parties with her friends, savoring every pleasure Lunathion—otherwise known as Crescent City— has to offer. But it all comes crumbling down when a ruthless murder shakes the very foundations of the city—and Bryce’s world. Two years later, her job has become a dead end, and she now seeks only blissful oblivion in the city’s most […]

The Right Kind of Fantasy for Now

The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison

May 31, 2020 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

The Goblin Emperor was exactly what I needed. First, I bought it recently when one of my local bookstores opened back up (in a limited socially distanced capacity), and it turned out to be the right kind of fantasy, still serious and interesting but ultimately hopeful. I was worried at first because the opening pages present the grammar and forms of address used by the characters, and a 300-ish entry long dictionary of characters and place names that’s actually hard to use is you don’t […]

I’m pretty sure it’s not you, book, it’s me

The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison

October 12, 2019 by Malin 1 Comment

3.5 stars Official description: The youngest, half-goblin son of the Emperor has lived his entire life in exile, distant from the Imperial Court and the deadly intrigue that suffuses it. But when his father and three sons in line for the throne are killed in an “accident,” he has no choice but to take his place as the only surviving rightful heir. Entirely unschooled in the art of court politics, he has no friends, no advisors, and the sure knowledge that whoever assassinated his father […]

Medieval Mayhem Aligns with Modern Politics

Fifth Ward Friendly Fire by Dale Lucas

August 10, 2019 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Bingo 14 (Reading the TBR) Fifth Ward: Friendly Fire has been on my shelf for a while, long enough for me to have gotten it not too long after it came out and have a sequel already out by the time I got to it. In a way, it’s a good thing that I waited as long as I did, because it seemed really timely for the political here and now in spite of not being set anywhere close. The Fifth Ward series is set […]

A Road Trip from Hell

March 11, 2018 by teresaelectro Leave a Comment

I’ve been slowly working my way through Kim Harrison’s urban fantasy series, The Hollows. For CBR10, I’m finally reviewing the ninth book in the series, Pale Demon. The book kicks off with the powerful witch, Rachel, and her supernatural business partners and BFFs, Jinx the pixie and Ivy the living vampire, on their way to the national witches convention in San Francisco. Rachel also needs to attend her brother’s wedding. She’s excited to see her mom at least. Of course, supernatural troubles won’t make the 2,300+ mile trek […]

Finishing my The Hollows re-read

October 26, 2017 by Malin Leave a Comment

So I’ve been doing a re-read of all of Kim Harrison’s The Hollows books in audio since March this year. This is my review for the latter part of the series (with the exception of book 10, A Perfect Blood, which seems impossible to get in audio book format, either on Audible or in any library I’ve got access to. So with that one, I skim-read the relevant Rachel and Trent parts and moved quickly on to the next in the series. I have reviewed all of these […]
