Fish out of water in deep political intrigue

The Goblin Emporer by Katherine Addison

January 21, 2026 by Dome'Loki 5 Comments

I honestly don’t remember how The Goblin Emperor got on my radar (Cannonball Read is a high possibility!) but it intrigued me enough to write it down on my list of books I’m interested in.  To make sure there were plenty of options for my family to get me books for our family Winter Solstice book exchange, I put it on the list, and my daughter picked it for me.  It’s the type of fantasy that is mostly fantasy through mentioned details: no dragons, no epic battles, […]

The Dragon Revenant

The Tomb of Dragons by Katherine Addison

October 11, 2025 by LittlePlat Leave a Comment

A few weeks back, I wrote a review for Katherine Addison’s The Angel of the Crows. Reading this book was actually a bit of tangent for me; I had been meaning to hunt down the third book in her Cemeteries of Amalo series, The Tomb of Dragons. And then I got distracted by the book whose existence became as a surprise. And a massive library hold time. The Tomb of Dragons is the third book in the Cemeteries of Amalo set, which are, in turn, […]

Shepherds Watch over Their Flocks. And Angels Watch over Shepherds

The Angel of the Crows by Katherine Addison

August 17, 2025 by LittlePlat Leave a Comment

I’m a bit boggled—how did I miss one of Katherine Addison’s books? Addison is the author of the magnificent The Goblin Emperor and the follow up trilogy, The Cemeteries of Amalo*. Usually her books are an automatic pre-order for me. But somehow, I missed that she had also written an alt-universe take on Sherlock Holmes as well.  The book comes with the following tagline: “This is not the story you think it is. These are not the characters you think they are. This is not […]

I would read ten more of these.

The Grief of Stones (The Cemeteries of Amalo, #2) by Katherine Addison

December 30, 2022 by narfna 2 Comments

These books are sad, contemplative, and lovely. I had a bit of a hard time getting in to the first one because the tone and pacing are pretty unique, but once I sank into it I really enjoyed myself. Right away with The Grief of Stones I was able to get back into the right mindset and I enjoyed it even more. I know there will be at least one more book following Celahar, but I find myself hoping there will be more than that. We need, […]

Who-dunnit and who are these people?

The Grief of Stones by Katherine Addison

August 21, 2022 by CoffeeShopReader 1 Comment

Bingo 10: Questions One main question of the Thara Celehar novellas is “who dunnit?’ as well as ‘why’, and that’s true of The Grief of Stones too, but also, there’s a bit of a twist about 2/3 of the way through which also adds “what will {x} do now?” Being a Witness for the Dead, someone who can see the final thoughts or images of someone who has died, it makes sense that Celehar would be involved in solving murders, as he is here, but […]

The Grief of Stones by Katherine Addison

For my friend Petra, without whom I would not be reading this series

The Grief of Stones by Katherine Addison

August 19, 2022 by Bea Pants 1 Comment

Petra was my dear friend and a dyed in the wool book nerd. She passed away this past November and I miss her terribly. I think of her any time I read one of these books because she recommended the first one and I’m sad that she’s not reading the series with me. The Grief of Stones is the third book in the Goblin Emperor series and the second book in The Cemeteries of Amalo series by Katherine Addison. The Cemeteries series follows Celehar, […]
