No spiders, but some dying at the end

January 15, 2016 by Bothari43 6 Comments

I liked John Dies at the End, and I loooved This Book is Full of Spiders, so I was very excited to get David Wong’s new book for Christmas. It is, as expected, bonkers and great. I think he’s growing up a little. This book is a little less Beavis & Butthead and a little more…I don’t know…Christopher Moore? There’s a bigger story, and a little less teenage boy nonsense, but there’s still a lot of humor, and still a lot of me pausing and […]

When the movie is made, I hope they get Abbi Jacobsen (Broad City) to star.

Futuristic Violence and Fancy Suits by David Wong

I can’t stress how much I loved this book. In many ways, it serves as a companion to Ready Player One. It follows Zoe Ashe from a life of poverty in a suburban trailer park through a terrifying hunt to an inheritance she didn’t know awaited her. It has the same basic plot as the aforementioned book (which I reviewed earlier in the year), but diverges in a number of distinct ways. For starters, the protagonist here is a woman. I don’t think that’s a […]

I Love This Book But I’ll Never Recommend It To Anyone

February 4, 2015 by Melina 6 Comments

There’s absolutely no reason why I should like or even love this book. In fact, I’m not going to recommend it to anyone I’ve ever met (on the Internet or in real life)…ever…because I don’t want to be judged on this book.  John Dies at the End is uneven, it definitely feels like something someone published piecemeal on the Internet before it was picked up by a publishing company (oh wait, it was), it needs a much better editor because there are issues with a […]

A very funny book with an unnecessary jab at Creedence Clearwater Revival

May 6, 2014 by alwaysanswerb Leave a Comment

Goodreads has this PSA for you: “WARNING: You may have a huge, invisible spider living in your skull. THIS IS NOT A METAPHOR. You will dismiss this as ridiculous fearmongering. Dismissing things as ridiculous fearmongering is, in fact, the first symptom of parasitic spider infection-the creature secretes a chemical into the brain to stimulate skepticism, in order to prevent you from seeking a cure. That’s just as well, since the “cure” involves learning what a chain saw tastes like. You can’t feel the spider, because […]

I was agog after reading that sentence. Could not read on for five minutes. I mean, wtf.

“Skin covered finger bones”—that’s hilarious. This was a very satisfying review.
