There are Never Enough Modern Retellings of Pride and Prejudice

Eligible by Curtis Sittenfeld

April 22, 2026 by itsjustme Leave a Comment

Timeless satire for the win. The many adaptations of Jane’s Pride and Prejudice only strengthen my admiration of the sly intelligence in the original. Apparently this is the 4th book of the Austen Project, what a delightful discovery. Liz Bennet is pulled back into her hometown Chicago and dysfunctional family dynamics when her father has a health scare. You will recognize the rest of the Bennet characters immediately. Author Curtis Sittenfeld is just loyal enough to the original’s wit, characters and storyline for comfort. This […]

Spoiler: This book was written by a man

Lock Every Door by Riley Sager

February 16, 2020 by genericwhitegirl 2 Comments

It’s been a year since I’ve completed a book (not including ones I’ve read with my 7-year old). An embarassingly adult book-free year. I’ve started a few, but either wasn’t interested enough to finish them (I’m looking at you Crazy Rich Asians), or, really, just not interested enough to start any new ones either. But I’m happy to announce my dry spell is over and Lock Every Door is the book to quench my thirst. This is the third book by Author Riley Sager, which […]

A Court of Fun and Nonsense

A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas

A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas

A Court of Wings and Ruin by Sarah J. Maas

August 28, 2019 by alwaysanswerb Leave a Comment

I waited way, way too long to review these properly (my MO for this entire Cannonball), so my scattered impressions are these: º Sarah J Maas has a real talent for world-building and concepts. Her depictions of the fae in this book and in her other series are rooted in just enough common fae lore that she doesn’t have to get bogged down filling in lots of backward detail, but she of course contributes enough of her own unique features that they aren’t interchangeable across […]

Even worse now than it was when it was first published

Iced (Fever #6) by Karen Marie Moning

August 26, 2019 by alwaysanswerb 3 Comments

Re-Read – August 2019: I first read and reviewed this 6 years ago and didn’t really enjoy it. But this summer, I wanted to revisit all of the Fever books, having been a big fan of the initial run of 5 in the series. And although my general feeling going into Iced was that this and the follow-up Burned were the weakest among them, I was actually a little cautiously optimistic that I might enjoy them more this time. A big part of that comes […]

Magic Triumphs (Kate Daniels #10) by Ilona Andrews

June 14, 2019 by alwaysanswerb Leave a Comment

I was holding out on reading this, the final book in Ilona Andrews’ Kate Daniel series, for a long time. Over the years, these books were warm stew, a thick blanket, and a campfire. They were familiar, comfortable, and satisfying, every time. After the first 9 books, as a reader, I wondered how on earth it was going to finish. It seemed impossible, because we knew that as powerful as Kate was, Roland, her father and enemy, was even moreso, and even if she could […]

telling over showing: the novel

The Signature of All Things by Elizabeth Gilbert

March 10, 2019 by andtheIToldYouSos 9 Comments

This novel is the literary embodiment of the kid who sat in the front row of your lecture course and had a long-winded comment to add to every. single. statement. made by your instructor. Not only do we go on a botanical exploration in the late 1700s- we go with CAPTAIN COOK! Not only do we supply pharmaceuticals to explorers- we sell to LEWIS AND CLARKE THEMSELVES! Not only did we happen upon the theory of evolution, but we BEAT DARWIN TO IT! These aren’t […]

I felt the same way. Interesting concept, but the execution was lacking.

on Sometimes, a book cover promises cats and lies. This book, on the other hand, delivers in spades. SO many cats, guys.
