Marko <3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3

This is a love story. This is a story about fathers and sons. This is a story about families. This is a story about war and peace. This is a story about tree spaceships and magic aliens and talking cats. Volume 1 of Saga introduced us to all the characters: Marko and Alana and their newborn child, who are being hunted as traitors and miscegenators across the universe by both sides of a never-ending galactic war; killer for hire The Will and his truth-telling cat; […]

Hi, I love you.

omg omg omg omg omg omg OMG WHAT DID I JUST READ. It’s like somebody reached into my subconscious, pulled out a bunch of things I think are awesome, then added some really weird and unexpected stuff on top of that, and finally topped it all off by illustrating the whole thing with beautiful, wildly colorful pictures. Like, everyone ever has said that Saga is awesome, but you really don’t have a feel for what that means until you actually read it for yourself. I’ve […]

When Superheroes Use Tinder for Good!

October 10, 2015 by Halbs Leave a Comment

It’s a good time for comics, especially for comics with younger protagonists. Marvel’s Ms. Marvel is a fun book, Morning Glories is Image’s hellish but entertaining read set in a prep school (I can speak to the first volumes), Gotham Academy is DC’s take on Harry Potter meeting The OC, and the Waid/Staples Archie reboot is my favorite comic in print. Then, there’s the recent Batgirl update. The new Stewart/Fletcher/Tarr team places Batgirl in college and in Burnside, which I think is Gotham’s Brooklyn. (By the way, comics with younger sidekicks have traditionally […]

Money, Sex, Power: Lazarus #1-19

September 28, 2015 by KM Bezner Leave a Comment

Lazarus takes place in the near future, where the countries we know have been abolished, and the world is governed by 16 wealthy ruling families. These families live in luxury, and those who serve them receive food and shelter. Everyone else is Waste. Each ruling family has what’s called a Lazarus: a member of the family who has been genetically modified and technologically enhanced to protect the family. Forever Carlyle is her family’s Lazarus. The youngest of her siblings, Forever has been trained since childhood […]

Coming of Age: Finding Direction in Lucy Knisley’s “An Age of License”

September 28, 2015 by KM Bezner Leave a Comment

After an invitation to speak at Raptus Comic Fest in Bergen, Norway, Knisley takes the opportunity to plan a trip around Europe to visit friends and family. Over the course of her travels she struggles with past relationships, work, and an uncertain future. She spends pages analyzing her love life, both with her ex John, and her current beau Henrik. What makes this difficult for her is that she still has feelings for John that she can’t seem to move past, and yet she knows […]

Nimona.

September 25, 2015 by tillie Leave a Comment

Lord Blackheart is not your average villain and he certainly does not want a sidekick. Especially not some kid, following him around all day. Except, Nimona is not just a kid, she’s a shapeshifter who can take the form of any living thing, and she has great plans for Lord Blackheart’s villainy. Sure the great Lord Ballister Blackheart may have been kicked out of the academy, betrayed in training by his best friend Sir Goldenloin (this is not a typo, I repeat this is not […]
