Absolutely do not read this book

My Absolute Darling by Gabriel Tallent

July 18, 2021 by Mobius_Walker Leave a Comment

BINGO – The Wilds [TW: sexual abuse, physical abuse, psychological abuse, abuse of a minor, gun violence, language (which I’ve included in white text below)] There’s been some discussion recently on Cannonball Read about how far into a book does one go before giving up. My procedure is to give a a book at least 1/3 of its total page count before giving up entirely. My 11th grade English teacher, Mrs. Julie Cogburn (one of the best I ever had), shared this procedure with us. […]

Someone’s Listening…

Someone's Listening by Seraphina Nova Glass

June 21, 2021 by msvreadsbooks Leave a Comment

I read this in a flurry with several other “domestic suspense” novels, so, admittedly, I had to refresh my memory. When I read the synopsis, I remembered that this one has a slightly different angle than some others, but it doesn’t stand out in my memory that strongly.  This could be more due to the fact that I read SEVERAL domestic thrillers in the course of a few weeks, and it’s now becoming much easier to predict what’s going on. Or it could be that […]

cbr12bingo – white whale (and BLACKOUT!!!! now I if only I could blackout and forget that this book exists!)

Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov

October 24, 2020 by andtheIToldYouSos 8 Comments

Lolita is absolutely vile, and I cannot be convinced otherwise. Yes, Humbert Humbert is the worst, and yes, we are supposed to know that he is a monster, but good lord this book is venerated from here to kingdom come as if it is the be all-end all of twentieth century literature. The edition that I picked up, which was published in 1997 as a commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the original pressing- and is still the one in current re-prints and mass circulation, STILL […]

The Perks of No Longer Being a Teenager

The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky

September 30, 2020 by andtheIToldYouSos 6 Comments

Oh, this book. I treated it like a sacred text back in high school. I gave it regular re-reads through the beginning of college, but then I let it fade into the background. It used to be my “Fall” book (despite it covering an entire school year) and while I continued to think back on fondly, I started to replace that nostalgia drip with the character-created playlists from within the book. It’s been years since I last picked it up, but Ride’s “Vapour Trail” creeps […]

Twisty Turny, More Please! (Bingo – Orange)

The Lost Man by Jane Harper

September 19, 2020 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

Ah Reading. Love it, can’t seem to focus on it. Pandemic, amiright? Something about staring at the same walls all day, and the same computer, and then needing to stare at this computer more to do reviews just doesn’t jive. I’m getting caught up with 3 books that I read…in the past few months. 9 books behind on my Cannonball. What I’m saying is, it’s a bit dire. But what I’m ALSO saying, is here I am, trying anyway. Hip hooray.* *I started this draft […]

terrific writing about terrible things

My Dark Vanessa by Kate Elizabeth Russell

May 31, 2020 by andtheIToldYouSos Leave a Comment

Trigger Warning: please read the tags before deciding to read this review and/or book. If you feel that you can read this book, then you must. If you feel that you cannot, I will pass no judgement. Perhaps you have heard of the drama surrounding this release. American Dirt was climbing the charts and dominating the controversy  conversation when My Dark Vanessa tip-toed in and threw a hat into the ring. There was an implication of plagiarism from a woman who wrote a memoir about being groomed and […]
