A Disappointing and Weirdly Removed Second Book in the Trilogy

Early Warning by Jane Smiley

June 16, 2022 by GentleRain Leave a Comment

I’ve read the first book in this trilogy (Some Luck) two or three times and really enjoy its structure and descriptions of farm and internal life. I therefore read this second book with interest, but I don’t think it was as good as the first one and I don’t think I would reread it. I’m still going to read the third one because these are transporting and feel like you’re watching a soap opera, so it’s good train commute reading. Not bad enough to stop […]

Jeanie and Julius have spent their entire lives together. Over half a century of life together has passed, and they have never spent an entire night separate from each other. Jeanie tends the garden with their mother, Dot, and Julius works odd jobs in the village. Jeanie, Julius, and Dot depend fiercely on one another. They accept nothing from the outside world- at least, Jeanie and Julius spent the last 51 years believing that they were accepting nothing and indebted to no one but each […]

this novel, much like a duck’s uterus, is a tangle of paths and twists

Family of Origin by C. J. Hauser

November 15, 2020 by andtheIToldYouSos Leave a Comment

Nope- not just referencing duck biology on a whim; ducks and their inner workings are integral to this story! Labyrinthine reproductive parts, family secrets, climate change, and possible reverse evolution are wound together into a tight knot by C.J. Hauser, and it is up to you to untangle, smooth, and rearrange the beautiful mess within. If you are totally in the dark re: duck workings, please go and watch Isabella Rosellini’s Green Porno entry “Seduce Me”. Obviously NSFW, definitely educational AND fun! Half-siblings Elsa and […]

The Red Pyramid book one of The Kane Chronicles by Orpheus Collar

May 28, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Rick Riordan is a popular author. I have not had the pleasure of reading his novels, but I have meet him once and have read two of his books adapted for the graphic novel format. The Red Pyramid book one of The Kane Chronicles was adapted by Orpheus Collar. And while it is a good story (we are following Egyptian mythology this time), it is also a slow story in places. It took me several days to finish it, as I was only able to […]

Pandora’s Legacy by Kara Leopard

December 2, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Pandora’s Legacy was one of those books that I judged by the cover. I know! One should not do that, but sometimes (especially with graphic novels) I figured I had an idea of the fantasy, realism and levels of scary vs. thriller. I do not like SCARY. Thriller on the other hand, I am a fan of. I like intellectual thrills Kara Leopard has a fun story taking on Greek myths. She might not follow the story a hundred percent (or at least how I […]

One song away from being a super hero

Black Canary: Ignite by Meg Cabot

November 11, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The story of the new Black Canary unfolds in Black Canary: Ignite. But first our heroine needs to survive Junior High school. But fighting her mother’s old nemesis might be easier than taking on the principal, Dr. Vogel. Meg Cabot’s voice comes alive in a new DC novel for the younger reader. Thirteen-year-old Dinah Lance is just trying to get through tests, friendship worries, cheerleading tryouts, convincing her father to let her join the GCPD Junior Police Academy (so she can become a police officer […]
