I am a born and bred southerner and recent transplant to the Midwest. I read because I want to, because I NEED to, and because I'm possibly ignoring the frigid temperatures. Until spring, and then I may read outside. I also enjoy cooking, witty banter, and cheese. All the cheese.

Hold on to your butts (and your obelisks)

The Obelisk Gate (Broken Earth #2) by N.K. Jemisin

January 18, 2021 by ardaigle 4 Comments

Imagine me, standing up, doing a slow clap standing ovation. That is how I feel about this trilogy. It’s been a while since a series has gripped me so thoroughly, and this coming from someone who doesn’t ready a lot in the genre of epic fantasy science fiction. And I guess this book is all of these? But it also transcends definition in a lot of ways because it is SO MANY THINGS. And how does she do all of these things well? I DON’T […]

You had me, then you lost me, a case of book whiplash

The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Michele Richardson

January 18, 2021 by ardaigle Leave a Comment

This is the January pick of my local library book club, that I was a regular participant of pre-covid. During the pandemic times, I have attended only one book club because Zoom book club for me doesn’t give me the same jollies. I read the book, the meeting is this week, will I attend? Only time will tell. The cover of this book had me arching an eyebrow and assuming it was “not for me” in that it looked more like a summer beach read, […]

If Spike is reading, I’m listening

Fool Moon: The Dresden Files, Book 2 by Jim Butcher

January 18, 2021 by ardaigle 1 Comment

Back for another installment of The Dresden Files, as read to me by the impeccable James Marsters, aka, Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. If listening to him read is wrong than I don’t want to be right. He is so soothing in my airpods, just the perfect pandemic listen. He has just the right gravel in his voice to BE Harry Dresden, wizard detective, and the acting chops to make the other characters distinctive and interesting: all in all, a very solid audio performer. […]

Run, don’t walk, to read this trilogy!

The Fifth Season (The Broken Earth, 1) by N.K. Jemisin

January 18, 2021 by ardaigle 14 Comments

And a happy new Cannonball year unto you! It’s my first review of the new year, and as last year my full cannonball slipped through my fingertips I’m hopeful that this is the year…of redemption. But like, also, this is the year of realizing that it’s just a number and as long as I’m reading I’m a winner. Onto my first review! I had already heard of N.K. Jemisin from LeVar Burton Reads, the podcast wherein the ever delightful LeVar Burton reads short stories. He […]

Spike as a wizard detective is the everything I needed in 2020.

Storm Front by (The Dresden Files #1)

December 30, 2020 by ardaigle 2 Comments

Let me get this out of the way. For the life of me, I struggle to identify the difference between science fiction and fantasy. I think wizards/vampires lands us firmly in the fantasy camp, but I’m not certain. I feel better having confessed this. That out of the way, let me give a thanks to the CBR community. I was looking for a new audio book to sink into and went searching through posts on the CBR facebook page and found a post from someone […]
