Baseball In Japan

You Gotta Have WA by Robert Whiting

August 19, 2019 by Jake Leave a Comment

Growing up a big baseball fan, I always knew the sport was popular in Japan. I also always knew it was played differently but I didn’t know why. Not necessarily played differently rules-wise (though there is some of that, like ties for example), but culturally, there were different expectations of the players and the clubs. Robert Whiting smoothly lays the differences out in this book. I worry sometimes that westerners don’t always have a sensitivity to the nuanced differences in respective eastern cultures but he […]

Master your mind

The Rock Warrior's Way by Arno Ilgner

August 7, 2019 by Sophia Leave a Comment

I’ve been climbing (primarily in the gym) for about four years now. I love it, and it is definitely one of my favorite hobbies. However, it’s always challenging and I often find myself fighting mental blocks. Sometimes I’m high up on the bouldering wall and I get scared, or I don’t want to push too hard when I’m lead climbing because I’m afraid of falling. Sometimes I’m just tired and I don’t feel like trying very hard. Someone at my gym saw me fail to […]

Um…Hockey?

Amazons: An Intimate Memoir by the First Woman Ever to Play in the National Hockey League by "Cleo Birdwell" (Don DeLillo)

July 27, 2019 by Jake Leave a Comment

Well then. I’ve wanted to read this book for a long time and I’ve tried many times. I’m a diehard New York Rangers fan and I thought a fictional take on what it would be like to be a female Ranger would be a blast. But after 10 pages, I soon realize that’s not what “Cleo Birdwell” (aka Don DeLillo) is going for here. This book is really about sex. Lots and lots of sex. Sexual exploration, etc. Which is fine. I’m not a prude. […]

Life might not be basketball, but basketball can be Life

The Crossover by Kwame Alexander

June 24, 2019 by BlackRaven 3 Comments

My goal this year was to read books I tend not to read. I was doing well but quickly fell back into my comfort zones. One being YA graphic novels. As far as I know, I have not read any Kwame Alexander novels. I might have read a short story or two, but that is it. Therefore, I have wanted to add him to my To Be Read List and figured a graphic novel was a good way. What it turned out to be was […]

Simonie and the Dance Contest  by Gail Matthews

June 19, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Simonie and the Dance Contest  will not be for everyone. It has a voice that is probably slightly older than the format and possibly a bit too classical sounding (even though it is coming out in August of this year). Gail Matthews book introduces the people of Taloyoak, Nunavut, and one boy who love of reading and dancing.  While perhaps more culture could have been brought in, the story is about trying, practicing and learning about listening to the music. It is set at Christmas […]

“Claim your power, and bring along your full humanity.”

Wolfpack: How to Come Together, Unleash Our Power, and Change the Game by Abby Wambach

June 13, 2019 by faintingviolet Leave a Comment

One of the weird things about me is that I *enjoy* attending graduation ceremonies. I can understand why others don’t like attending them – they can be very long and require us to sit in uncomfortable locations but there’s something about watching people I love accomplish something and be recognized for it that makes my heart happy. Because I’m a human full of contradictions I hated attending my own graduations. All of them were pure torture. One of the quintessential parts of graduations is the […]
