“…she couldn’t have done it and she must have done it.”

Iphigenia in Forest Hills by Janet Malcom

January 7, 2026 by GentleRain Leave a Comment

I found this a frustrating read although on the face of it, it seems just up my alley; true crime about a small Jewish community in New York City is catnip for me. There was also overlap with subjects that I’m interested in, like domestic violence, child sexual abuse, and the treatment of families in crisis by the legal system. Iphigenia in Forest Hills is billed as an “anatomy of a murder trial” and the main thrust of the analysis here seems to be that […]

Forest Euphoria: The Abounding Queerness of Nature by Patricia Ononiwu Kaishian

January 7, 2026 by fiordeligi 15 Comments

As soon as I saw the title “Forest Euphoria: The Abounding Queerness of Nature” (by Patricia Ononiwu Kaishian), I knew I wanted to read this book. It’s been all over the 2025 “best of” lists, from Time to Vanity Fair to Vulture, and it’s easy to see why this one is resonating so intensely given what the last year has meant to LGBTQ+ folks. The queer expansiveness and community-building of Kaishian’s book is an effective emotional antidote to all the anti-trans scare tactics and fake […]

Ask Me About Polyamory: The Best of Kimchi Cuddles by Tikva Wolf

January 7, 2026 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Ask Me About Polyamory: The Best of Kimchi Cuddles by by Tikva Wolf, forward by Sophie Labelle    If one is curious about polyamory but wants something easier than a full on text, then this might be the one you need. You will take away from it what you put into it. My personal take was that some things helped me understand the subject, other things I felt made things even more confusing, sometimes I thought she was preaching to the converted, and some comics […]

No Brain the Same: Neurodivergent Young Activists Shaping Our Future by Lindsay H. Metcalf, Keila V. Dawson, Jeanette Bradley

January 7, 2026 by BlackRaven 1 Comment

No Brain the Same: Neurodivergent Young Activists Shaping Our Future by Lindsay H. Metcalf (Editor), Keila V. Dawson (Editor), Jeanette Bradley (Illustrator) The use of poetry in multiple formats (free verse, couplets, etc) allows this to be accessible to many listeners and readers. From “everyday” people who do big things to people who are famous like Billie Ellish, we learn how the brain is strange, beautiful and capable of almost anything we put our minds to. Each poet tells a story about the person that […]

The Weedy Garden: A Happy Habitat for Wild Friends by Margaret Renkl and Billy Renkl

January 5, 2026 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The Weedy Garden: A Happy Habitat for Wild Friends by Margaret Renkl and illustrated by Billy Renkl is a lovely, adorable and sweet read. The illustrations pop. I would like to see this as a series that shows “weedy gardens” around the country, so we can get an idea of climate and environmental differences. This book is a prose poem (a few lines on a page) telling us what you will find in a garden that is seemingly just a “weedy garden.” There are bees, […]

He stepped on toes…just not while dancing

A Place to Dance: How Richard Lamberty Brought Change to the Ballroom by Eric Rosswood, Richard Lamberty and Vincent Chen

January 5, 2026 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

A Place to Dance: How Richard Lamberty Brought Change to the Ballroom by Eric Rosswood, Richard Lamberty and illustrated by Vincent Chen (read via online reader, due August 2026) While dance is a popular subject, ballroom dancing is not. Therefore to see a new part of an old theme is fun and seeing it within the LGBTQ world is a great bonus. Richard Lamberty has never been on my radar, or if he was (the few times I would watch ballroom dancing with my mother) […]
