This book is set in the future, in which robots do everything, and anything. It follows a robot by the name of Roz as she learns to survive in the wild after crashing into an isolated island. She has to learn to communicate with animals by watching their patterns and learning from them. However, she’s a foreign object, made of metal and quite loud. Then, one horrible day, she accidentally kills a family of ducks by crushing their nest. One egg survives, and it’s now her responsibility.
This book was one of the most heartwarming books I have ever read. Not only is her taking care of a duckling and worrying about it adorable, but her interactions with all the animals too. After watching a possum pretend to die she said! “I was certain you were dead” “Oh, what a lovely thing to say!” (the possums response), which is beyond charming. She wasn’t even aware it would compliment the possum as at this point she still knows very little of anything. This is another thing done really well, the things she knows stay really consistent, and consistently grow with time. This is not all too common in books, as it is hard to keep track of everything your character knows, or doesn’t. The book is written for younger people, but it could be a good, if short, read for anyone. It’s simple, and comforting in that manner.
This book was around 4.8 stars, just because it didn’t have depth, which can be good. It worked in the books, but it’s not 5 stars. This is a book to curl up and read over the course of a day, and certainly a comfort in this world.
