Unbury the secrets

Rubble: The Hidden Letters of the Warsaw Ghetto by Elisa Boxer and Oksana Drachkovska

February 9, 2026 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The book Under the Rubble: The Hidden Letters of the Warsaw Ghetto by Elisa Boxer and illustrator Oksana Drachkovska did not give me a warm and happy feeling. It gave me a cold and sad feeling. The theme is obvious by the title as we know what the Warsaw Ghetto was. Now, one would think that this is not a book for kids, and it is not for the very young or frankly overly sensitive. But when you know your child (or classroom) is ready, […]

I didn’t try the recipes (since I don’t know the difference between a cup and a teaspoon) but everything sounds yummy

If you are looking for a new book to add to your collection of worldly books or Muslim representation, then Ramadan on Rahma Road: A Recipe Storybook by Razeena Omar Gutta and Faaiza Osman, with illustrator Atieh Sohrabi should be on your radar. Read via an online reader (but currently available), this is a Ramadan story with 24 recipes that represent each of the families on Rahma Road. As we read, the people (from different backgrounds and dynamics) prepare a dish from their culture for […]

Prickles and Prides by Wendy Barron

Hooray for My Brain! by Paul Meisel

February 9, 2026 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I am not always a science person, but when I find one that I like, it sticks with me and is usually a children’s book. Two such books are reviewed below. One is about animals in both fiction illustrations and factual humor and the other is about the nature of the human brain for younger readers. Both were read via online reader copies and the first is due early April 2026 and the second later in the month.. As much as I enjoyed Prickles and […]

The journey of words

A Walk in the Words by Hudson Talbott

February 9, 2026 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Recently I learned that author (of such titles as The Lost Colony of Roanoke and It’s All about Me-Ow: A Young Cat’s Guide to the Good Life) and illustrator (such works as Into the Woods by James Lapine and Show Way by Jacqueline Woodson) Hudson Talbott, had passed away. I was, of course, saddened to hear of the news, but was basically unaware (with a few exceptions) of his work. And, yes, I was sorry that it took his death to put him on my […]

The Faces Behind the Trials

Valley of Forgetting: Alzheimer’s Families and the Search for a Cure by Jennie Erin Smith

February 8, 2026 by LittlePlat Leave a Comment

Guess I’m back on the topic of Alzheimer’s Disease research again. Jennie Erin Smith’s  “Valley of Forgetting: Alzheimer’s Families and the Search for a Cure” is very tightly focused on one particular subset of familial Alzheimer’s being studied in Columbia. This particular form of Alzheimer’s is caused by a mutation in the gene presenilin-1 (PSEN1), E280A. A single amino acid change at position 280 leads to altered protein function. E280A is one of the most common causes of early onset familial Alzheimer’s, and the vast […]

Woe: A Housecat's Story of Despair by Lucy Knisley

February 8, 2026 by faintingviolet 2 Comments

I feel as though my reading year is starting off very slowly. I have a couple books on hand from the library that I’m having trouble sinking into and should probably return and try again later, I have been waiting for other things to come off holds, and had to wait for a book I purchased to be replaced since pages were falling out of the binding.  Plus, my attention span hasn’t really been great, either.   So, I decided to lean a bit into some of the short works I had selected for some […]
