Billionaires Are Bad, This Book Is Great

Birnam Wood by Eleanor Catton

by Leave a Comment

“Birnam Wood,” by Eleanor Catton, was published in 2023. I picked up my copy in 2024, and it took me approximately two years to get into it. I started the book multiple times, but just couldn’t get past the dense prose that is apparently Catton’s specialty. This time I stuck with it, and I’m so very glad I did. This book is fantastic. It won’t be for everyone, and you really do have to tough it out for a bit, but it’s absolutely worth it. […]

Pounce into the world of Cats

A Cat Is a Cat in Any Life by Ema Tohyama

by Leave a Comment

One thing I like about working in a bookstore is that there are always ways to get free books and/or books you wouldn’t purchase for yourself, therefore never read. And A Cat Is a Cat in Any Life by Ema Tohyama is one of those types of books. I got it for free and it wouldn’t have picked it up otherwise. Do you like manga, cats and off beat humor? Okay, they are here. I like cats. Enjoy manga. And do not mind off beat […]

Frostbite: A Graphic Novel by Ian Boothby and Pia Guerra

by Leave a Comment

Frostbite: A Graphic Novel by Ian Boothby and Pia Guerra is the type of graphic novel that I would have read as a teen. If I had read graphic novels. So, therefore, I should say, if it was a novel, it would have been up my alley. It might surprise you I did read these types of books as a teen as I have never liked horror. However, as an adult I realized that I can do horror if there is a thriller element and […]

Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees: Rite of Spring by Patrick Horvath and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou

by Leave a Comment

Back in November 2025 I found out that book two in the Beneath the Trees series was having a second volume. I tend not to pre order that far in advance, but I said, Screw it! This gal will have her day…. ah book!   And in July 2026  Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees: Rite of Spring by Patrick Horvath, Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou, and a few others, came out. Okay, yes it is good, but I had built up volume one so much and had such […]

Book 2 of Laura Perez

Totem by Laura Pérez and Andrea Rosenberg

by Leave a Comment

I found Laura Pérez via one of my graphic novels down the rabbit hole searches, and Nocturnos came up. I got a finished copy from the library and said that that was an interesting read, let’s do Totem (translated by Andrea Rosenberg) next. Another library read and another book that is literary and artsy. Both titles have a “lofty” element but not a “talk down” to the reader element. But it is sophisticated, and therefore, it might not be for a casual reader of graphic […]

Book one of Laura Perez

Nocturnos by Laura Perez and Andrea Rosenberg

by Leave a Comment

For the book Nocturnos by Laura Perez and translator Andrea Rosenberg, I had to average out my rating. There are points for my gut reaction, points for my love of the art, and there are points for how I think others will feel about it. Therefore, my score is a 3.75. And that is a good representation of things as it is not for everyone, but there’s a lot to unpack so everyone might find something.  It is literary. It is a dream within a […]
