Frostbite: A Graphic Novel by Ian Boothby and Pia Guerra is the type of graphic novel that I would have read as a teen. If I had read graphic novels. So, therefore, I should say, if it was a novel, it would have been up my alley. It might surprise you I did read these types of books as a teen as I have never liked horror. However, as an adult I realized that I can do horror if there is a thriller element and is light on the icky gore element. Especially if the icky gore element is gratuitous or just goes one step too far. And this book leans towards thriller with a bit of ick.
Therefore, the concept was great. I loved the idea of two siblings doing social media stunts to gain likes, followers, sponsorships (though the only thing teen me would recognize is stunts and siblings). I liked how the monsters are sneaky and have a few flaws (sunlight, semi holy water), and there is a pretty obvious “Hey dude! Plot point!” that I missed as I was trying to get into the black and white reader copy illustrations that made things a bit awkward to follow (I would like to see the finished results, which are available).
Yet, there was something missing, there was not the “umph” to the action I wanted. It felt as if it was book one or part of a “Goosebumps” like series. It had a definite “novella feeling” where you got a series of “subject books” but nothing was connected. They have a cliff hanger ending or a “maybe there is more but things are closed. For now.” but no actual sequel. With that said, Frostbite has that “We’re done. For now.” ending. It was a quick read, just what I needed to wash the brain of some serious subjects I had been reading. I didn’t dislike things. Sure, I would have liked a few things “filled in” and wonder why other things were added, but today’s at least ages 10 and up and that 12-to-14/15 year old me will be/is happy.
