Previously on Supernatural… God created some stuff and decided it was good. Two fools did something they were explicitly told not to do and that led to a population explosion (see: begatting). Now all these people are running around being, well, people, and God is up to HERE with their antics. It was all sex, drugs and rock n’ roll, 24/7; like a Sig Ep house in the 80’s. There was crime, depravity, and general wickedness all up on earth. Women were having sex with […]
Think 45 is bad? It could be worse…
One of Penguin’s Little Black Classics range, I picked this up for less than a quid during a recent odyssey to an amazing bookstore (I tend to make pilgrimages to book stores in the way someone else might visit cathedrals or other holy sites). I may have lost 3 hours and a decent amount of money, but I did walk out with two bulging bags of treats. The Little Black Classic range is great for this kind of shopping, enabling you to walk away with […]
… and Then the Murders Began.
“The terror, which would not end for another twenty-eight years — if it ever did end — began, so far as I know or can tell, with a boat made from a sheet of newspaper floating down a gutter swollen with rain.”* And then the murders began. There’s a meme going around Facebook where you add “then the murders began” to the opening line of a famous story. Stephen King’s It doesn’t really change much when you add that line, because, you see, that is when […]
To Devour or Not to Devour, That is the Question
“The Devourers” is going to be one of those books that I think people are either are going to really like or really not like. It’s a modern day story about Alok who lives in Kolkata and meets a stranger. We learn from this stranger that he’s half shape-shifter (what we might call a werewolf). Alok and the stranger develop a sort of friendship and the stranger asks Alok to type out the stories found on two scrolls the stranger has been carrying. We jump […]
Y’all are going to love this one
Okay, speaking directly to those of y’all who love Mary Roach and that book about being a woman in Victorian times — just go read this book. It is by far the funniest book about plagues that I have ever read. And I am saying that as a person who has read multiple books about plagues. Jennifer Wright, who also wrote that book about bad breakups throughout time that most of y’all didn’t seem to like very much, wrote Get Well Soon about 14 different plagues throughout […]
I Believe the Zombie Children Are Our Future
Or, at the very least, they are the future in M.R. Carey’s book, The Girl With All the Gifts. The book is about Melanie, zombie child extraordinaire. She’s being held, along with several other (albeit less extraordinary) zombie children, at a research facility in England. At the facility, they attend classes, eat grubs and occasionally get dissected, all in the name of science. Dr. Caldwell does the dissecting, and Helen Justineau does the teaching. Below is a song I “wrote” about their adventures (please to […]
