Their Own Voices

Your House Will Pay by Steph Cha

A Woman Is No Man by Etaf Rum

On the Come Up by Angie Thomas

December 10, 2019 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

If anyone needs a book for the Own Voices Bingo square next year, these would all make excellent choices! (4 stars) Your House Will Pay by Steph Cha I was certain I’d added this to my TBR after reading a Cannonball review on it, but I can’t find one so maybe not. Maybe it came from Goodreads best of list for 2019? Regardless, it’s a relatively new book but I’m betting we’ll start seeing it everywhere. Your House Will Pay starts out in L.A. in the 1990s, in a atmosphere of unrest and fear after a police officer has shot and […]

History, huh?

Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston

December 9, 2019 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

Oh my God I loved this book. I waited forever to get it on audio and I totally recommend getting on your library’s hold list right away if you have not yet read it. It is so smart and funny and sweet and snarky. Casey McQuiston had one hell of a debut. Alex, his sister June, and their best friend Nora (granddaughter of the VP) have spent most of their teenage years in the White House. Now Alex and June’s mother (the first female president) is up for re-election, and Alex is wanting to take more of a role in […]

Two non-fiction books about death: one very serious, one much less so

Crisis in the Red Zone: The Story of the Deadliest Ebola Outbreak in History, and of the Outbreaks to Come by Richard Preston

Will My Cat Eat My Eyeballs?: Big Questions from Tiny Mortals About Death by Caitlin Doughty

December 9, 2019 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

(4 stars) Crisis in the Red Zone: The Story of the Deadliest Ebola Outbreak in History, and of the Outbreaks to Come by Richard Preston My best friend and I were obsessed with The Hot Zone in high school. I wrote a damn book report on it at one point. The combination of the horror of the disease and the power of the science fighting it struck a chord with us (more so with her maybe — she’s a scientist now!) and we continued reading books along this same vein. So when I saw that Preston had released another non-fiction book […]

Memoirs and Essays

Nice Try: Stories of Best Intentions and Mixed Results by Josh Gondelman

Trick Mirror: Reflections on Self-Delusion by Jia Tolentino

Baby Don't Hurt Me: Stories and Scars from Saturday Night Live by Chris Kattan

So, Anyway... by John Cleese

Burn the Place: A Memoir by Iliana Regan

Mr. Know-It-All: The Tarnished Wisdom of a Filth Elder by John Waters

December 9, 2019 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

I apparently started this draft on 11/21 — time to catch up! (4 stars) Nice Try: Stories of Best Intentions and Mixed Results by Josh Gondelman I can’t figure out where I heard about this book — I thought it was on CBR but I can’t find any reviews. Anyway, I’d never heard of Josh Gondelman before picking up this book, but he turns out he’s damn funny. He used to write for Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, and also created the SeinfeldToday Twitter account back in 2012. Gondelman is a self-described nice guy, but not in a neck-beard […]

“It’s the trying that heals you. That’s all you have to do. Just try.”

How to Walk Away by Katherine Center

November 21, 2019 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

It may be because I just finished 5 books about serial killers, but I really enjoyed this lovely story about a woman who overcomes a tragedy and falls in love again. It was sweet without being too sweet and I really enjoyed watching the two main characters interact. It made for an excellent palate cleanser. “When you don’t know what to do for yourself, do something for somebody else.” Margaret Jacobsen ignores ALL of her instincts, and gets into a plane flown by her unqualified boyfriend. He crashes the plane, and walks away, while Margaret ends up with serious burns […]

I have read like, a LOT of serial killer fiction lately. I’m probably on a list somewhere now

The Naturalist (The Naturalist #1) by Andrew Mayne

Looking Glass (The Naturalist #2) by Andrew Mayne

Murder Theory (The Naturalist #3) by Andrew Mayne

Dark Pattern (The Naturalist #4) by Andrew Mayne

The Stranger Beside Me: Ted Bundy The Shocking Inside Story by Ann Rule

November 20, 2019 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

I enjoyed the hell out of this series — I downloaded the first one because Audible had it on some kind of special, and I ended up listening to all 4 books in less than three weeks. They reminded me a lot of Lincoln and Child’s Pendergast series — I loved these books about FBI agent Aloysius Pendergast when I was a teenager, and I have the sudden desire to reread them now that I’ve finished this series (book 4 does end of a cliffhanger, but it just came out this year so I imagine I’ll be waiting for the […]

Fiction Round Up

You Can Thank Me Later by Kelly Harms

The Book of Essie by Meghan MacLean Weir

The Dreamers by Karen Thompson Walker

The Wedding Party (The Wedding Date #3) by Jasmine Guillory

November 13, 2019 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

(4 stars) You Can Thank Me Later: A Novella by Kelly Harms I’ve found the Audible originals to be hit or miss (Scalzi’s The Dispatcher was probably the only other one I really liked) but they’re free and I like Kelly Harms, so I gave this one a shot. It was pretty good — sort of sappy, sort of cheesy, lots of good descriptions of food. So basically, like a Hallmark movie in an audiobook — which I do not intend to be an insult. Sophie Dicksinson is a chef, and every year she hosts Thanksgiving for her family — […]

Non-Fiction Round Up

Things We Didn't Talk About When I Was a Girl: A Memoir by Jeannie Vanasco

A Wild and Precious Life: A Memoir by Edie Windsor, Joshua Lyon

Ordinary Girls by Jaquira Díaz

November 13, 2019 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

(5 stars) A Wild and Precious Life: A Memoir by Edie Windsor, Joshua Lyon I LOVED this book. LOVED it. It’s funny and smart and made me cry sad tears AND happy tears. If you know nothing about Edie Windsor, you probably at least know this: she brought the case United States v. Windsor to the Supreme Court in 2013, defeating section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act. Stories about Windsor and her wife Thea were everywhere — they had been together for 40 years, and when Thea passed away, Edie was forced to pay insane inheritance taxes that would […]
