These kids are much tougher than I ever would be
Any time I see a trailer for a movie that is also a book, I usually rush out and read the book. I saw the trailer for this movie, and I knew I was headed to the library. They gist of these books (there are three, so you know I’ll be reading all three!) is that all children in the world either die of a brain disease (horribly), or they have unusual powers. The change usually comes around age ten for all of the children. […]
“The beauty of it cannot be understood, either, and when you see beauty in desolation it changes something inside you.”
I’m a sucker for a book that promises to be a mind-bender and has a bunch of people talking about how weird it is. Enter Annihilation, the first book of the Southern Reach trilogy. The series is about Area X, a strip of coastline that’s been reclaimed by nature and is being shielded from the general public as a military-protected “ecological disaster site.” In the decades since Area X was formed, various expedition teams have gone through the border with the mission of documenting just […]
A man grows what he can, and tends it.
I’ve always read King with a bit of detached bemusement. I love his writing for the languid ease with which he captures the chronic normalcy of everyday life in a small town. When people tell me they don’t read King because he’s too scary, I’m always a little surprised that that’s the takeaway people have. I’ve never been scared by his books. But his characters….. His characterization is amazing, and the world he populates with those characters leaves me in awe. To that point, I […]

still in the mood for thrillers
Still in the mood for thrillers. Here are some recent reads: And Then There Were None, 1939, by Agatha Christie This one is unlikely to be reimagined by Kenneth Branagh, but you never know. And Then There Were None is one of Christie’s grimmest, and most famous tales. Due to its original title, it is also one of her most controversial. Christie loved to use nursery rhyme references in her book titles, and this book actually incorporates an entire rhyme in the book as a twisted […]
