CBR11 #4: Pretending to Care

The Pretenders (Cemetery Girl #1) by Charlaine Harris and Christopher Golden

March 4, 2019 by Siege Leave a Comment

I wanted to like this, but…I just didn’t. I don’t know if it was too short, or whether it would have more appeal for a YA audience, but I was just kind of bored. Calexa Rose finds herself dumped in a graveyard, with no memory of her identity, and only the knowledge that someone tried to kill her. She can also see ghosts. She makes herself at home in the cemetery, trying to hide out from whomever tried to kill her, while attempting to find out who she is. She steals some stuff. She develops uncomfortable friendships with some old […]

Episode 1-17: See You At The Crossroads, Bone Bone Bone Wherein I review: 59. Day Shift (Midnight, Texas #2) by Charlaine Harris 60. The Cutting Edge (Lincoln Rhyme #14) by Jeffery Deaver 61. No Time Like The Past (St. Mary’s Chronicles #5) by Jodi Taylor 62. Night Shift (Midnight, Texas #3) by Charlaine Harris 63. Arcanum Unbounded by Brandon Sanderson A residual Sookie Stackhouse trilogy comes to a real f–ker of an end: great characters, AWFUL names. Deaver goes a little off the rails in the latest Lincoln Rhyme mystery.  I keep chugging through Jodi Taylor’s delightfully British time tranovels.  And […]

My Watch Has Ended

Dead Ever After & After Dead (Sookie Stackhouse #13 & 13.5) by Charlaine Harris

May 5, 2017 by faintingviolet 7 Comments

I had divorced myself from the world of Sookie Stackhouse following the terrible twelfth book in the series, Deadlocked, back in 2012. It was, to me, a complete destruction of all the reasons I had been gamely reading along with this series since my friend Meika came across it in 2007 and we rapidly consumed all the available books. When I reviewed Deadlocked I thought I’d eventually read this book because I have series completion OCD, but in the intervening years I’ve avoided it. For those of you unfamiliar with the Southern Vampire Series, the character of Sookie Stackhouse, or […]

Skip the book, watch season one, then skip the rest of True Blood

Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris

March 31, 2017 by ingres77 8 Comments

Like most of us, I think, I watched the show that grew out of these novels. And while I very much enjoyed the first season of True Blood, the bad acting (especially from Anna Paquin) and tiresome storyline of subsequent seasons eventually lost me. I honestly don’t even know if the show is still on, and can’t really be bothered to check. So why did I read the book upon which the show was based? To be honest…..I don’t really know the answer to that. It was there, I guess. For what it’s worth, I think (for one season, at […]

Not with a vampire bang, but with a supe whimper

Dead Ever After by Charlaine Harris

October 4, 2016 by ardaigle 4 Comments

This is the 13th and final installment in the Southern Vampire Mystery Series, aka, the True Blood books. Sometimes, you finish a series and you are left wanting more. This was not one of those times. These have been my beach books, my brain candy, and I have enjoyed them for what they are, but the thrill was gone by the end of the book. After so long in Sookie’s world the characters have become predictable, as have the plot lines. Or, when there is a surprise it feels forced but you just sort of shrug about it and move […]

Sookie + Supes = Madcap Hijinks

Dead Reckoning by Charlaine Harris

November 8, 2015 by ardaigle Leave a Comment

This Charlaine Harris series is my guilty pleasure, the dirty secret I try not to read in public. I don’t think they are particularly great, but sometimes when life is tough you just need brain candy, and this is where I turn. Ironically, I read the next book in the series before this one because I simply didn’t realize I had skipped it. Her writing style is such that each book spends half the time explaining what happened before, and it had been a while since I put this series down, so I hardly even noticed. It was only when […]
