Book Club Discussion: The Glass Hotel

October 16, 2020 by faintingviolet 16 Comments

Our third and final book club of the year has arrived, and I’m excited to see what everyone has to think about Emily St. John Mandel’s latest The Glass Hotel. For those of you who might be joining in for #CannonBookClub for the first time (hello new friends!) all are welcome, and you don’t need to be registered* for this year’s Read to speak your mind. For the boilerplate: ground rules remain the same as they always have. The topics are numbered, and we ask […]

Reminder: The Glass Hotel #CannonBookClub is Coming Soon

October 5, 2020 by faintingviolet 1 Comment

Our third and final book club of the year will be October 16 and 17 and we’re circling back around to Emily St. John Mandel and her newest book, The Glass Hotel which was released earlier this year. The Glass Hotel is described as: …a captivating novel of money, beauty, white-collar crime, ghosts, and moral compromise in which a woman disappears from a container ship off the coast of Mauritania and a massive Ponzi scheme implodes in New York, dragging countless fortunes with it. So, if […]

#CBR12 Bingo: Violet (Obviously also works for Book Club, and will fit into Debut and maybe UnCannon and Friendship, as well)   All Nax Hall has ever dreamed of is going Ellis Station Academy and qualifying as a pilot. Unfortunately, he fails his entrance exam and is sent packing after less than twenty-four hours. Sharing his fate are Rion, Case and Zee, and while they’re all waiting for their one-way shuttle back to Earth, they are witness to a terrorist attack on the space station. The […]

CBR Diversions – Dream Casting

June 26, 2020 by teresaelectro 20 Comments

As a lover of all things pop culture, I love to read and watch book adaptations on the big and small screen. I first saw HBO’s True Blood series before absolutely devouring the Charlaine Harris Sookie Stackhouse books. Same for The Golden Compass, which was panned by critics, but led to me reading the His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman. The screen versions captivated me and I simply had to know the literary origins of the characters. When I read a particularly engaging novel, […]

Book Club Discussion: The Future is Queer!

June 19, 2020 by faintingviolet 19 Comments

The time has arrived, I’ve been looking forward to The Future is Queer book club since we hatched the idea late last year. What better way to celebrate Pride than to focus on some speculative fiction by and about LGBTQ folks. Whether you read one or all four of our options, I hope you find something below that sparks your interest so we can continue to enjoy talking about books together. On to the boilerplate: ground rules remain the same as they always have. For […]
