The Shrinking Man by Richard Matheson

September 25, 2025 by Caesar's Wife Leave a Comment

The Shrinking Man is a science fiction novel first published in 1956, written by Richard Matheson. You guessed it: the story follows a man who is shrinking. The novel opens with a detailed description of a fight between the protagonist, Scott Carey, who by this point is about an inch tall, and a spider. He is trapped in the basement. Scott fights the spider with a pin, and the narrative describes in depth the difficulties of navigating the terrain of the basement. It makes for […]

Hell House

Hell House by Richard Matheson

October 22, 2023 by jmsudar Leave a Comment

I have a weird relationship with Richard Matheson. I’m a big fan of his work, sort of. He certainly was influential, with his work on the Twilight Zone and I Am Legend having a large impact in my life. But also the book I Am Legend is significantly weirder than any of the movie adaptations. The closest film is Omega Man with Charlton Heston, with the weird sexuality of the vampires being one of their biggest threats. Matheson often disliked adaptations of his work that […]

Three Horror Short Story Collections

The Shores of Space by Richard Matheson

Everything's Eventual by Stephen King

Night Shift by Stephen King

CBR15Bingo: Violence (plenty of violence here!) It’s interesting going back and doing these reviews a while after I read the books because I get to see what sticks around in my mind and what doesn’t. Say what you will about Stephen King, but his stories stay with you. There’s something about his ability to get across a strong visual image and have it embed itself in your brain forever. He really taps into something very primal with his writing, especially his earlier work. I am […]

Mixed Bag of Mixed Bags

The Wordy Shipmates by Sarah Vowell

Partly Cloudy Patriot by Sarah Vowell

Steel and Other Stories by Richard Matheson

The Secret Lives of Church Ladies by Deesha Philyaw

Going Solo by Roald Dahl

Rocket Ship Galileo by Robert Heinlein

V2 by Robert Harris

The Wordy Shipmates – 4/5 Stars I wonder how many people know that if you’re from parts of the country, you’re basically not taught about the Puritans at all. You get the same kind of education that Sarah Vowell talks about early in this book with discussions about “the first Thanksgiving” and plenty of other oblique, but not entirely in depth look into the early colonialization of New England. In the South, you’re mostly taught about Jamestown, or your own respective colony (if you had […]

This is something new I’m trying this year, where I review short stories as stand alone stories, not part of anthologies or collections. Here are parts I, II, III, and IV. The Eyes Have It by Philip K Dick (3 stars) This is, so I’ve read, the shortest story in Philip K. Dick’s bibliography. And the copyright doesn’t appear to have ever been renewed, so it can easily be found online. Here it is at Project Guttenberg. It tells the story of a man reading […]

I am Legend by Richard Matheson

October 24, 2019 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

I don’t know about you, but if the world ended and all there were left were these kind of vampires and kind of zombies and I spent my time trying to figure out if they were inflicted with a virus or the vampires of myth and legend, I don’t think I’d spend half my time constantly pounding my head about whether or not I’d ever get to have sex again. It’s such a weird go to for so many sci-fi writer, and like, I get […]
