Two erasers in a pencil case

Inbetweens by Faith Erin Hicks

May 6, 2026 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

When you are a fan of an author, or at least with me, I find one of two things happening with a book: Either  I love it so much that even if it is bad, I don’t notice. I am just a fan blinded by my fangirling mind. Or I am terribly disappointed and figure that there is no way my author wrote it, as I have way too high expectations for it. Thankfully Inbetweens by Faith Erin Hicks was neither.  It is in between […]

I don’t know who wandered more: the book or me writing this review

Tongues, Volume 1 by Anders Nilsen

May 6, 2026 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Tongues, Vol. 1 by Anders Nilsen   I have NO idea what was read. The stories all bounce all over the place. The images are busy, the text mixes and gets lost in the illustrations. The images are colorless but are not black and white. The characters are unlikable, even Astrid, who might be the one that will save the world. Or destroy it. It’s still up in the air. There is nothing good and positive. Even The Prisoner has faults and he seems to […]

I should have posted this on May 4th for the Star Wars tie-in

2 Dumb Dinos by Nathan Hamill and Eric Filipkowski

May 6, 2026 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The abstractness of jokes (makes no sense, with no punchline) of 2 Dumb Dinos, will hit the right reader, but it was not my cup of tar (pit). Do you Nathan Hamill and Eric Filipkowski and I hope you find the right audience. To help you do so, let me mention some things about the book. I read via an online reader, but it is available. Therefore, I am not sure of the actual size, but I have a feeling the book will be on […]

Crimes Against Our Own Humanity

They Called Us Enemy by George Takei, Justin Eisinger, and Steven R. Scott

May 2, 2026 by matt_thac Leave a Comment

I’ve spent a career at the margins of politics, learning a lot about how people interact and how the most insignificant seeming interaction can have massive ripple effects and how political discourse flows in certain directions, mainly towards fear. It’s a world of real-politik which can best described with the world-weary quote from Men in Black, “A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky, dangerous animals.” Nowhere is this more evident than in George Takei (Yes, Sulu from Star Trek)’s graphic novel rendition of his […]

What do you want to do tonight, Kino? The same thing we do every night, Hermes… try to travel the world

Kino’s Journey: the Beautiful World by Iruka Shiimiya

April 30, 2026 by vega-table Leave a Comment

The manga Kino’s Journey: the Beautiful World is by Iruka Shiimiya. It’s based on the light novels by Keiichi Sigsawa. There have been two anime adaptations. This review is only for the manga, but if something from another version slips in, sorry. Kino is a professional tourist. Hermes is their motorrad, which means a sentient talking non-flying motorcycle. They visit countries. Kino stays for three days, preferably at a cheap motel with a hot shower, then leaves. The series is like a series of short […]

Life – you gotta do it

Stone Fruit by Lee Lai

Cannon by Lee Lai

April 30, 2026 by vega-table Leave a Comment

Lee Lai’s graphic novels Stone Fruit and Cannon are both about being queer Chinese women in North America. They’re about people and relationships and living lives that don’t really have beginning-middle-end stories. They just have yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Repeat. Stone Fruit – Why is it called that? I think it’s because stone fruit are soft and sweet. But if you continue eating blindly, they get hard and bitter. It’s such common knowledge that there’s a hard pit in the middle, no one will think […]
