The Problem With Compliance

The Memory Policy by Yoko Ogawa

July 22, 2026 by G.D. Giant Leave a Comment

The Memory Police, by Yoko Ogawa is a quiet, spare, literary tale of dystopia. While I can’t say I enjoyed reading this book, I can say that I think it’s very good. I found the book hard to enjoy for a couple of reasons. One, because it was very strange concept. Our unnamed narrator and her unnamed friends and family live on an unnamed island where things disappear. But, they disappear from people’s memories first, and then the people of the island get rid of the […]

The other hockey romance

Hockey Girl Loves Drama Boy by Faith Erin Hicks

July 22, 2026 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Back in 2023 Hockey Girl Loves Drama Boy by Faith Erin Hicks came out. It seemed to not get the attention that other graphic novels by her seemed to get. Or at least, I didn’t see the push for it. Which is sad, since it is a fun book with romance, theater, hockey, and how it relates to life. Hicks weaves an interesting story together that gets you thinking. There were a couple of bumps in the flow for me, but overall, it was a […]

Trumps of Doom

The Trumps of Doom

Trumps of Doom by Roger Zelazny

July 22, 2026 by jmsudar Leave a Comment

It’s interesting that this is one of the Amber books that’s stayed in my mind the most, but that I don’t actually remember very well. I’m mostly confident of this because I remember… none of it. In my recollection of reading these stories as a teenager, I can at least remember that there’s a final battle between the Amberites and the forces of Chaos, but the specifics of that are so different. They’re also not very impressive, though this may be unfair because the Ice […]

The Glam Reaper’s Guide to Slaying: Life Lessons for Rebellious Souls by Bill Crisafi

July 22, 2026 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The Glam Reaper’s Guide to Self-Care Slaying: Life Lessons for Rebellious Souls by Bill Crisafi is really warped and very messed up! I like it! Okay, seriously this is one wacky trip with Death and how freaking GLAM-ouros she is. How she has long nails and just rocks her heels and knows what fashion is to die for. They also know how to help those who are having self-esteem problems, confidence issues and are just stuck and can’t give up the ghost. Sometimes, literally. We […]

She’s a Rich Girl and She’s Gone Too Far

The Heiress by Rachel Hawkins

July 22, 2026 by jeverett15 Leave a Comment

The titular heiress of Rachel Hawkins’s 2024 novel is Ruby McTavish, a North Carolina socialite with a life marked by controversy surrounding her four husbands and their untimely deaths. By the time the novel starts, however, Ruby has been dead for some time. Ruby’s only son, a boy named Cam she adopted late in life, should have inherited the family home and her fortune, but he rejected it all because of his estrangement from the family. It’s only when his uncle’s death exposes some financial […]

Orlando: A Graphic Novel Biography by Jules Scheele

July 22, 2026 by BlackRaven 1 Comment

A while back I read two versions of 1984 by Orwell in a graphic novel format. I had done this at least once before with The Great Gatsby (two graphic novels, same title) and now have done it with Orlando by Virginia Wolff. Each time the dual readings allowed me to pick up different pieces of the puzzle and allowed for comparison that helped me see what “worked best” for my personal reading style. With the first book, I was confused as to plot points […]
