I’ve been around off and on since the first year of CBR, and it and books have been a constant in my life through multiple moves and a major career change. I live with 3 cats, Dany, Jace and Jorah. Fantasy, specific types of sci-fi, historical fiction (especially mysteries) and romance tend to be my go to genres now a days. As if going home isn’t bad enough, now you’re also a werewolf

Such Sharp Teeth by Rachel Harrison

January 25, 2026 by Jen K Leave a Comment

One thing that I really appreciated about this novel and was rather refreshing is that after the narrator, Rory, gets bit by a werewolf, she doesn’t spend weeks denying the idea of the supernatural. From the beginning, she acknowledges that she was bitten by a monster, even if she tells everyone it was a bear because she doesn’t want people to think she is crazy. Based on her new cravings and other changes, she quickly puts it together with werewolf. She still doesn’t totally believe […]

So much parental drama to resolve

A Witch’s Guide to Magical Innkeeping by Sangu Mandanna

January 25, 2026 by Jen K Leave a Comment

I quite liked A Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches but I also struggled with most cozy fantasy I read last year, especially if it was an author’s second or third cozy fantasy. I’m happy to report that this novel was just as good as A Very Secret Society. You can read these two in any order – I believe they are set in the same universe but I am not sure if they even share any of the same characters. Sera Swan was once […]

64 months later, a new Dresden Files

Twelve Months by Jim Butcher

January 25, 2026 by Jen K 2 Comments

I used to really like The Dresden Files but I haven’t been as excited about them in a long time. The two long gaps between releases didn’t help at all, and after discovering Seanan McGuire and Ilona Andrews, some of the bro-iness of The Dresden Files was bit harder to overlook/stood out more in comparison. While Harry matured a lot over the years in that regard, he seemed to be backsliding in the novels released most recently before this one, 2020’s Peace Talks and Battle […]

Still a Bit Too Reliant on Its Original Inspiration

Alchemised by SenLinYu

January 12, 2026 by Jen K Leave a Comment

I have lots of random thoughts and questions about this but in my defense – it’s a thousand page novel that is based on a Dramione fanfic. I’m not a fanfic reader – I respect the concept and idea but I think my head just doesn’t want to mix canon and non-canon, even if I want to spend more time in a universe. I especially have not read any Dramione fanfic because I just want to stay from all things JKR and HP, and also […]

You can be sure about more than one thing

Through Gates of Garnet and Gold by Seanan McGuire

January 8, 2026 by Jen K Leave a Comment

Seanan McGuire has three different series that are on a predictable release schedule: Septembers are for October Daye, May for InCryptid and January? Well, that’s saved for the Wayward Children novella series. As always, no quests allowed. For anyone new to the series, the even releases are deeper dives into the story of one of the characters (usually someone we have met already, sometimes someone to be introduced soon) while the odds should be read in order and are part of a continuing storyline that […]

All of Us Murderers by KJ Charles

The Mystery of the Ward and the Family Curse

All of Us Murderers by KJ Charles

January 8, 2026 by Jen K Leave a Comment

This is another first for me! Even though I know KJ Charles is a popular author here, I never got around to reading her till now. It probably doesn’t help that for a long time I didn’t realize KJ Charles and Cat Sebastian were two different authors and kept conflating the two. I liked a lot about this one. I quite enjoyed the gothic mansion, toxic family dynamics and trapped in the house set up. I also appreciated how she set up the narrator and […]
