At least the cover is pretty

The Astral Library by Kate Quinn

April 8, 2026 by Jen K 1 Comment

Damn … this book is going to be one of those The Last Jedi situations for me, I can already tell. In other words, I was disappointed with the novel/didn’t love it for my own story reasons but a lot of the people leaving negative reviews are doing it for ridiculous conservative reasons. It’s like, “I didn’t have an issue with those things, you book-banning transphobes, I just wanted a more engaging main character/overall story.” It starts off strong, following the main character and narrator, […]

I got 3 hours and 52 books. Let’s see if I can finally do this.

We Solve Murders by Richard Osman

Clockwork Boys by T. Kingfisher

The Wonder Engine by T. Kingfisher

The Rose Code by Kate Quinn

The Wedding People by Alison Espach

Whelp, I apologize in advance for what I’m about to do. For 17 years I have been trying to complete a full Cannonball and I have never once succeeded. Sometimes I don’t read enough, but mostly I don’t write enough. I get caught up in knots trying to write a perfect review and then worry I’m spending too much time writing instead of reading and it becomes a whole thing because my brain is a nightmare. So this year I decided I’d just write rough […]

one of my favorite books of the year

The Briar Club by Kate Quinn

December 27, 2024 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

There are many books that I am going to be speed-reviewing this year, but I need to write a proper review for this book because I’ve named it one of my best reads for 2024 (and added it to my books-i-recommend shelf, which hasn’t had an addition in quite a while). With this novel, Kate Quinn is back to what I think is fine form–group of women, something happened at time point 2, we are currently at time point 3, and will flip back and […]

Alice? Alice? Who the F*** is Alice?

The Alice Network by Kate Quinn

July 5, 2024 by jeverett15 Leave a Comment

The Alice Network follows parallel narratives surrounding women and war. In 1947, Charlie St. Clair is a promising young woman: bright, well-educated, and the daughter of wealthy parents. But the toll of the recently-ended war has thrown Charlie off-kilter, leaving her in danger of becoming a disgrace to her family. Nineteen and pregnant, she’s on a trip with her mother to “take care of her little problem” and return to the life her parents have planned for her. But Charlie has another idea: tracking down […]

No Code Breaking Necessary to Enjoy this One

The Rose Code by Kate Quinn

January 29, 2023 by reginadelmar 2 Comments

This historical fiction is about women code breakers at Bletchley Park (Officially the Government Code and Cypher School) during WWII. The three main characters, Mab, Osla and Beth are thrown together through Mab and Isla’s arrival at Bletchley Park. Mab is from Shoreditch. She is unabashedly clawing her way out of poverty and aiming toward stability and a better life by marrying up (so to speak). Osla is a socialite, of Canadian birth but English at heart. She has stayed in London to help with […]

Lady Codebreakers

The Rose Code by Kate Quinn

January 11, 2023 by Debcapsfan 1 Comment

CBR Passport- New Author I decided to get back into reading more historical fiction this year. My kid loves history, and he’s been reading a lot of World War II books lately so I picked this up at my local library. They have a deal where you can check out more recent e-books without a hold if you keep them from a shorter amount of time. The Rose Code by Kate Quinn tells the story of three women at Bletchley Park. Oslo is a debutante, […]

I felt the same way. Interesting concept, but the execution was lacking.

on Sometimes, a book cover promises cats and lies. This book, on the other hand, delivers in spades. SO many cats, guys.
