unfortunately not as enjoyable for me as the prior outings

The Diamond Eye by Kate Quinn

January 9, 2023 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

Authors should definitely, absolutely be able to change up their MO. No one expects that they’re automatons, churning out crowd pleasers–in fact, there are a few authors who have made explicit that the pressure of pleasing fans sapped the joy of writing, thereby leading to even less author-ing. That all aside, I find myself somewhat disappointed by this latest foray into Kate Quinnland, as I know it from The Alice Network and The Rose Code, the latter of which I enjoyed quite a bit. As always, there is […]

A short but interesting story

Signal Moon by Kate Quinn

November 9, 2022 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

I think this book was a short that fulfilled a Kindle reading challenge accomplishment, so it was kind of a random pick. I didn’t know anything about the interception and decryption of enemy naval communications. I’m not that into history, so that isn’t a surprise. This story centers around a woman named Lily who works in Bletchley Park in 1943 decrypting enemy communications. She scans through radio transmissions and passes on what she hears to her superiors. If there’s anything helpful or actionable, they can […]

read in case of reader emergency!

The Rose Code by Kate Quinn

August 10, 2022 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

Another book I really should have read much sooner, recommended by my dear, brilliant bookbird of a feather Evin. At the same time, though, I’m glad that I had this book squirreled away because I’d been through a bit of a rough patch when it came to novels at this point in the summer. I’d just moved to London, and a number of books I’d been looking forward to turned out to be solid 3* novels–which isn’t a bad thing, but if you know how […]

Behind in reviews, we are doing a weird omnibus

The ABC Murders by Hercule Poirot

The Alice Network by Kate Quinn

Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge and the Teachings of Plants by Robin Wall Kimmerer

People We Meet On Vacation by Emily Henry

Falling for a Rake by Eve Pendle

May 31, 2021 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

The ABC Murders – *** Picked up on a whim after a recommendation! As I’m also v behind in reviews and somewhat struggling to remember specifics of all the books I’ve read, it’s a perfect opportunity to put into practice my rating scale. Hercule Poirot mysteries are a mainstay in a very specific type of comfort reading, and honestly Christie is a genius for being able to write so many varying tropes in a way that feels connected but fresh. I definitely thought we were […]

Kate Quinn Has Cracked the Code for a Great Read

The Rose Code by Kate Quinn

March 30, 2021 by jomidi 1 Comment

The Rose Code by Kate Quinn is a triumph.  A wonderful historical fiction with a little bit of everything – history, humor, romance, and  mystery.   The pages come alive with a mix of  great fictional characters, alongside real historical figures.  The plot centers around Bletchley Park during World War II, where mostly women worked as codebreakers trying to crack the German and Italian codes.  Today we know that their work was critical to the allied victory, but back then their work was strictly classified and […]

Night Witches and Nazi Hunters!

The Huntress: A Novel by Kate Quinn

November 12, 2020 by ElCicco Leave a Comment

A couple of Cannonballs ago, I reviewed Kate Quinn’s novel The Alice Network, a work of historical fiction about female spies and the two world wars. With The Huntress, Quinn returns to familiar ground. This riveting novel is set during WWII and the five years following the end of the war. Like The Alice Network, The Huntress features strong female characters who defy social norms, taking on jobs traditionally reserved for men and insisting on getting their due. It’s a long story that reads very […]

I felt the same way. Interesting concept, but the execution was lacking.

on Sometimes, a book cover promises cats and lies. This book, on the other hand, delivers in spades. SO many cats, guys.
