Agatha Christie meets Groundhog Day

The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton

October 31, 2021 by teresaelectro Leave a Comment

The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton was recommended/chosen by my Mocha Girls Read book club in May. I definitely heard the hype for his book in several book groups along with Cannonball Read. Thus, I’m reviewing it for the “Rec’d” bingo square. I was confused as to why they changed the US title to “7 1/2 Deaths” from the original “Seven Deaths”. Apparently, the publisher wanted to distinguish it from The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid. I […]

An unusual murder mystery

The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton

October 4, 2020 by Malin Leave a Comment

“Gosford Park” meets “Groundhog Day” by way of Agatha Christie – the most inventive story you’ll read this year.   Tonight, Evelyn Hardcastle will be killed… again.   It is meant to be a celebration but it ends in tragedy. As fireworks explode overhead, Evelyn Hardcastle, the young and beautiful daughter of the house, is killed.   But Evelyn will not die just once. Until Aiden – one of the guests summoned to Blackheath for the party – can solve her murder, the day will […]

Loved this book except for one pretty big thing.

The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton

Aside from one pretty big complaint, this is one of the most fun books I’ve read this year. I love Agatha Christie-style murder mysteries (a good house party mystery always gets me going). I love when books mess with time. And I love sf elements mashed with other genres. I was worried the ending wouldn’t be able to bring it all together, but it did, with an added element of human emotion that I wasn’t quite expecting. My advice to you on this one is […]

Fun closed murder-mystery with a lot of men

The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton

January 29, 2019 by tillie 3 Comments

I am so annoyed at this book. First of all it was way too long. It should have been edited down, not just for length but also several times there was language so floral that it took me completely out of the mystery. I mean stuff like this: “Thankfully, the leaves and twigs are so demoralized by the earlier rain they don’t have the heart to cry out beneath my feet.” Shut up. Just say what you mean. Urh. And every.single.character was a man. And […]
