A Theory of What Makes for Good Plant Based Substitutions (and review of a restaurant cookbook)

Sugar Taco at Home by Jayde Nicole, Nia Gatica Campos, Alan Campos

January 5, 2025 by CoffeeShopReader 1 Comment

I mentioned in my previous review acquiring two cookbooks at a local favorite shop that is no longer local; the shop is Boswell Book Company in Milwaukee WI. The second cookbook is Sugar Taco at Home, Sugar Taco apparently being a vegan taco joint in LA. There’s a little more vegan preaching in this book than I’d like, but no so much that it totally overtakes the recipes and yummy food. For a restaurant book, this surprisingly doable, and not overly chef-fy. Being a restaurant […]

Dragons Love Tacos 2: The Sequel by Adam Rubin

March 8, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I remember reading, and liking, Dragons Love Tacos by Adam Rubin. However, as I was reading Dragons Love Tacos 2: The Sequel (still by Rubin) I did not remember a ding-darn thing! And while you can read these two books separately, it does help if you know the first book as there are a few things referenced in book two that are “need to knows.” This time dragons are not eating tacos, as they have run out of tacos. And it is up to them, […]

What’s a tortilla? And what to put in it?

Masa: Techniques, Recipes, and Reflections on a Timeless Staple by Jorge Gaviria

January 15, 2023 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I’ve started trying to have a new cookbook at the beginning of the year and try to work my way through all or most of it; there’s a bit of a backlog on this and I’m finally getting into a Mexican vegan book I got (and reviewed) last year. Before starting into it, I saw Masa: Techniques, Recipes, and Reflections on a Timeless Staple on some ‘top books of …’ lists, and I figured that might be a good accompaniment to really get into some […]

You’re My Best Friend

Pizza and Taco: Who’s the Best? by Stephen Shaskan

January 7, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

One of the things I like about graphic novels is that they do not “look” like a book. They are books, but they have this feeling they are not really a book to a reluctant or early reader. Does this make them the best format to read? Maybe/Maybe not. But you and your friends can vote on it, like best friends Pizza and Taco do in Pizza and Taco: Who’s the Best? But like any election, there is a lead up to why there is […]
