The Emma Project

The Emma Project by Sonali Dev

April 18, 2022 by Classic Leave a Comment

Please note that I received this book via NetGalley. This did not affect my rating or review.  This book almost caused a reading slump. I wasn’t enjoying it and kept setting it aside and then just didn’t have the energy to read anything else. I gave this book 1 star for a lot of reasons. First, there was no real character development for Naina or Vansh. Other characters who have appeared in this series don’t always act in ways that we would expect them to […]

Incense and Sensibility

Incense and Sensibility by Sonali Dev

January 24, 2022 by Classic Leave a Comment

Wow. So apparently I don’t like homages to Sense and Sensibility either. This book dragged. A lot. There is no chemistry between India and Yash. I feel for Yash, but most of this was due to him deciding to just lie to everyone and I started running out of sympathy. I also laughed about the unrealistic ending. Maybe because the media these day’s don’t seem to be on the side of anyone that would be considered liberal like Yash, I think the fall out would […]

Incense and Sensibility by Sonali Dev

Flora: there’s two lotus flowers on the cover of this book, which made me realize that the main heroine’s hair was short the entire time–not super common for romance novels, will give it that! I do not understand why I keep reading these books, I clearly do not like them. And every time I read them I get grumpy that this is likely The Indian Retelling of Jane Austen’s oeuvre, at least for a number of years. You don’t see Jane Austen and Werewolves anywhere, […]

A disappointment, a pleasant surprise, and an I-should-have-known-better.

Well Played by Jen DeLuca

Not Like the Movies by Kerry Winfrey

Recipe for Persuasion by Sonali Dev

Continuing with my year-end wrap-up of books that I didn’t feel like reviewing earlier, this post will feature three “sequels” to books I have previously read and reviewed. First up, Well Played. Truly, a disappointment. I was so looking forward to this one, a follow-up to last year’s fun and charming Well Met. Still set in the weird little Maryland town that obsesses over a summer Renaissance Faire, this time we focus on Emily and Simon’s friend Stacey, who worked as a pub wench with […]

Pride and Prejudice Meets Bollywood

Pride, Prejudice and Other Flavors by Sonali Dev

October 30, 2020 by LanierHgts Leave a Comment

BINGO RED Let me start by saying that I love Jane Austen novels, and I especially love Pride and Prejudice. I love that book so much that I will read any remix of the novel, and I have read several. This has to be by far my favorite to date. First of all, I think I may have found a Mr. Darcy who is better than, or at least as good as, Colin Firth. And I don’t say that lightly because any P&P fan knows […]

Half agony, half hope, all swoon

Recipe for Persuasion by Sonali Dev

February 6, 2020 by J 7 Comments

As much as I love Pride & Prejudice, the book just doesn’t update well. (I’m posting a review soon of a spectacular P&P fail.) So many of the elements of the story don’t work out of context. Seduction of underage girls, the importance of one sibling’s marriage on the family’s fortunes, how many families one dines with, fine eyes… stuff just hits different now. Persuasion, however, is, in many ways, a much easier tale to update. A young woman too sensitive to her family’s censure, […]
