Why be Emma when you could be Gildebarb?

Well Met by Jen DeLuca

February 1, 2021 by pineolliepple 1 Comment

Girl meets boy, girl hates boy, girl joins boy’s small-town Renaissance Faire as a busty tavern wench…you know the drill. I started getting into romcoms last summer as fluffy escapism from everything going on, and in the last eight months as things have grown increasingly dark I’m now averaging one spicy enemies-to-lovers for every two books of any other genre, so at this point, I’m just looking for a fun two-day read with a happy ending, the more bonkers the premise, the better. And in […]

Well Met

Well Met by Jen Deluca

December 29, 2020 by Caitycat 1 Comment

I received Well Met from the CBR Gift Exchange last year. I was sent a lovely copy of the book that was autographed by the author. Well Met is the story of Emily, who is staying with her sister and niece while the sister recovers from a broken leg. One of Emily’s duties ends up being taking part in a renaissance festival. Her niece, Caitlin, can’t participate without an adult. So Emily becomes Emma the barwench. Unfortunately, Emily clashes with Simon, English teacher, director of […]

A disappointment, a pleasant surprise, and an I-should-have-known-better.

Well Played by Jen DeLuca

Not Like the Movies by Kerry Winfrey

Recipe for Persuasion by Sonali Dev

Continuing with my year-end wrap-up of books that I didn’t feel like reviewing earlier, this post will feature three “sequels” to books I have previously read and reviewed. First up, Well Played. Truly, a disappointment. I was so looking forward to this one, a follow-up to last year’s fun and charming Well Met. Still set in the weird little Maryland town that obsesses over a summer Renaissance Faire, this time we focus on Emily and Simon’s friend Stacey, who worked as a pub wench with […]

Beckie peaked in high school, gaslights small town, gets the guy because plot

Well Met by Jen Deluca

Everything is closed, so enjoy a very long review about a book I hated. Let’s start with the general plot: 25 year old Emily was recently dumped by her boyfriend and lost her job at the bar where she worked. She is aimless and feeling down on herself because she supported said boyfriend through law school and he dumped her as soon as he was out in the world. Fortunately, her (very distant) sister April got into a terrible car accident and needed a full […]

Calling all Renn Faire Nerds!

Well Met by Jen DeLuca

January 17, 2020 by Rachel 4 Comments

Swoon. The opening line of Well Met grabbed me from the beginning as I found it hilarious. “I didn’t choose the wench life. The wench life chose me.” That is not an opening line usually found in a modern romance novel. After a devastating breakup, our main character Emily finds herself in the tiny town of Willow Creek, Maryland. Emily acts as a personal chauffeur and errand girl for her older sister who recently got in a car accident. Emily also helps out with her […]
