Make Merry – no matter the season

February 21, 2016 by Reba Leave a Comment

So what if the holidays are over? Bring a little joy into your life by reading this anthology of Regency romances by some of the best historical romance writers.  Well, some of my favorites, anyway. This delightful collection of tales overlap and intertwine around a Yule party, but each one is complete in and of itself and offers both delicious temptation and savory seductions, as well as some surprisingly deep emotional connections – not at all easy to pull off in short stories, much less […]

Not another celebrity biography at all

February 21, 2016 by Malin Leave a Comment

My experience with Aziz Ansari prior to getting this audiobook was as follows. Playing exuberant, outgoing and quite exasperating pop culture and fashion obsessive Tom Haverford on Parks and Recreation, then more recently in Master of None as struggling New York actor Dev, who while quite different from Tom, frequently exasperated me nonetheless with his constant whining and inability to accept how good he had it, being really very privileged even as a minority actor. As a result, I wasn’t really all that interested in […]

First book in the series is too focused on future books, not enough on itself.

My biggest problem with this book is that it felt forced, and Courtney Milan’s stuff has never felt forced to me before. I can tell she really struggled with this one. I feel like I would have been able to tell even if I hadn’t read her newsletter where she confessed that Once Upon a Marquess had given her tons of trouble, to the point where she basically had to scrap it and start the book over. There was just too much she was trying […]

In fair Verona, We lay our scene

February 19, 2016 by expandingbookshelf Leave a Comment

Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet has a bittersweet ending. Our teenage heroes lay dead, but over their broken bodies their shattered parents make peace. No longer will the Montagues and Capulets wage war against each other. They’ve seen enough death.  That’s how the play ends. With peace. Of course, a truce is easier said than done. After all, this battle has been raging between generations. Not everyone is content to pick up their swords and go home. Blood is still boiling, and someone is determined to […]

Cannonball Book Club Reads Romance Discussion Topics

February 19, 2016 by faintingviolet Leave a Comment

Book Club discussion has begun! Join us on the discussion post. We’re just over 10 days away from our March 1st Book Club conversation about The Bollywood Bride by Sonali Dev. I’ve just finished up reading it myself, and I definitely have some mixed feelings about the novel (I’ve posted mine already, but feel free to wait if you prefer). Below I’ve gathered a few possible discussion topics for March 1st, if you have more ideas for topics of discussion, please just leave them below […]

A Bollywood disappointment.

February 18, 2016 by narfna 20 Comments

So nobody else has written a review of this yet. I guess I’ll be the first, in advance of our book club discussion next month. I’m not going to say much in this review, because I want to save most of my thoughts for then, but as will be obvious from the title of my review, I was very disappointed in this book. And I’m definitely reconsidering reading Dev’s first book, which I’d put on my TBR previously after it was featured on NPR’s romance […]

I was agog after reading that sentence. Could not read on for five minutes. I mean, wtf.

“Skin covered finger bones”—that’s hilarious. This was a very satisfying review.
