Kind of wondering what Queenie would think of current events?

Queenie by Candace Carty-Williams

June 5, 2020 by Malin Leave a Comment

Official book description: Queenie Jenkins is a 25-year-old Jamaican British woman living in London, straddling two cultures and slotting neatly into neither. She works at a national newspaper, where she’s constantly forced to compare herself to her white middle-class peers. After a messy break up from her long-term white boyfriend, Queenie seeks comfort in all the wrong places…including several hazardous men who do a good job of occupying brain space and a bad job of affirming self-worth. As Queenie careens from one questionable decision to […]

Everyone Needs Their Own Group of Corgis

Queenie by Candice Carty-Williams

December 20, 2019 by Jenny S 2 Comments

This novel is one of the books that I received from Bonnie for the Cannonball Read Book Exchange.  One thing to know is that I had the hard cover copy of the book checked out from my community college library (which has an amazing collection of new fiction with few folks on the waitlist) for an embarrassingly long time—since maybe July (just kept renewing it . . .). Just when I was starting to get threatening e-mails from circulation mentioned the replacement cost of the […]

Thank You, Thank You, and My Local College Library Thanks you

December 15, 2019 by Jenny S Leave a Comment

I am embarrassed to say that though I am just posting this now, these two lovely books from Bonnie arrived in the mail the Monday after Thanksgiving.  I did a quick happy dance and then dove back into the giant pile of essays, research portfolios, and other writing assignments needing to be graded/responded to (yes, I am a community college writing teacher.)  I am just now climbing my way out of that pile and posting this long overdue thank you. First of all, I […]

She is Not Bridget, She’s Queenie

Queenie by Candice Carty-Williams

June 4, 2019 by lumenatrix Leave a Comment

A lot of the other mentions I have seen for this book compares it to Bridget Jones’s Diary. I can see why the comparison is made, and for about the first quarter I can almost see it, but this book really is something else entirely and the comparison is overall pretty shallow and off base. Queenie is a young black woman in London. She is working for a magazine and trying to find her voice as a writer and work her way off the “Events” […]

Being brave isn’t the same as being okay.

Queenie by Candice Carty-WIlliams

I hadn’t heard of Queenie, until I read vel veeter’s recent review, and made an immediate mental note to check it out. I’m glad I did. From Amazon: Queenie Jenkins is a 25-year-old Jamaican British woman living in London, straddling two cultures and slotting neatly into neither. She works at a national newspaper, where she’s constantly forced to compare herself to her white middle class peers. After a messy break up from her long-term white boyfriend, Queenie seeks comfort in all the wrong places…including several […]

But he just did other things to upset me…

Queenie by Candace Carty-Williams

I think this one will be popular here. First, it’s got a tremendous cover. Don’t read the promotional material because it makes a too neat but unsatisfying comparison for this novel that deserves more. We might Queenie, the narrator of this novel, in flux. She’s visiting a doctor and being informed she’s recently had a miscarriage, which is vexing for her because she’s on a “break” from her longterm boyfriend/fiance, Tom. This news, and her current emotional turmoil, her group of friends, and her boredom […]

This sounds amazing. I saw some discussion today about contemporary monster romance being the descendant of fairy tales.
