I am embarrassed to say that though I am just posting this now, these two lovely books from Bonnie arrived in the mail the Monday after Thanksgiving. I did a quick happy dance and then dove back into the giant pile of essays, research portfolios, and other writing assignments needing to be graded/responded to (yes, I am a community college writing teacher.) I am just now climbing my way out of that pile and posting this long overdue thank you.
First of all, I loved Ibi Zoboi’s first novel, American Street, and so am really looking forward to reading Pride. However, it was the choice of Queenie by Candice Carty-Williams that was truly perfect. Here is the second embarrassing thing I will admit in this post. I have had this novel checked out from my community college’s library since July (faculty don’t pay fines which is a bad, I repeat, bad thing.) It’s been some kind of fall and though I have read a few books, this sat gathering dust on my bedside table until right before Thanksgiving. I had renewed it twice and then was simply ignoring the overdue notices accumulating in my inbox because I wanted to read it (and god d*!#^@@t, don’t rush me! I’m having a really stressful semester.)
By the end of Thanksgiving break, I had only gotten about three chapters into it because my brain had simply shut down and was only good for processing HGTV shows involving subway tile and shiplap (with some forays into the CW DC Universe.)
Then the package from Bonnie arrived and I realized I could actually return the library copy and continue with my own. Commence happy dancing!
So Bonnie, I thank you, and the circulation staff at my college library thanks you!
