An Underdeveloped Look a AI-Human Relationships

Pixels of You by Ananth Hirsh, Yuko Ota, and J.R. Doyle

February 7, 2022 by GentleRain Leave a Comment

I’ve been following Ananth Hirsh and Yuko Ota’s work for years (I really love their autobio comics), so I preordered this and promptly forgot I did that until it showed up in the mail today. It’s nice to give yourself little presents in the future like that, and preordering really helps the authors. Overall, though, I found this to be a bit of a disappointment when compared to their other work. Fawn and Indira are interns at a photography gallery, and their first meeting is […]

Midwestern High End but how Representational Is it?

Dishing Up Minnesota by Teresa Marrone

January 15, 2022 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Imagine a regional cookbook that includes recipes from that region but also from farms/mills/markets/etc and from various cultures related to the region, with some background and history to help connect everything; that’s Dishing Up Minnesota. I may be biased, having been born and raised in that state, but it also means that I actually know something about the food culture of that part of the country. Some ingredient and recipes are obvious necessities, such as a wild rice soup, at least one or two walleye […]

Manly Men Doing Manly Things

The Painter of Battles by Arturo Perez-Reverte

November 3, 2021 by elderberrywine Leave a Comment

It didn’t take too long for me to realize who this author reminded me of.  Not particularly his style, but more his content.  Hemingway.  Coming from me, that is not a complement. Faulques is a professional photographer who specializes in the battlefield.  In Serbia, he photographs a young Croatian fighter, Markovik, and the picture wins a prestigious award, and is also published widely.  Unfortunately, it also makes Markovik himself famous, and his wife and child are killed.  Thus, he is searching for Faulques.  Meanwhile, Faulques […]

Book Cover: taste the wild

Recipes and Stories from Canada would be enough

Taste the Wild by Lisa Nieschlag, Lars Wentrup

September 11, 2021 by CoffeeShopReader 1 Comment

Bingo 20: Landscape As the cover (pictured above) suggests, this book is about Canada (see wooded landscape in mists) in terms of food (it’s part cookbook) and character (it’s part excerpted prose bits from travel and fiction stories, and photography collection too). I can see how all of this could fit together, except that it doesn’t quite work out. The photos are gorgeous but the sentimental/philosophical sayings accompanying them are so out of context that to me at least they come off as either hollow […]

Mary Dixie Carter’s The Photographer

The Photographer by Mary Dixie Carter

July 13, 2021 by msvreadsbooks Leave a Comment

Another scary, psychological thriller with an unwell woman at the center (and a person on the cover #cbr13bingo). Delta Dawn is a photographer in New York City, and she spends most of her time taking photos of children’s birthday parties having discovered her knack for making children look happy and healthy and like their parents’ dreams.  She routinely photoshops images that are less than perfect to fulfill the fantasy these wealthy families pay her to portray. When she meets the Straub family, Delta feels she […]

What Happens When Industries and Tastes Change

Abandoned London by Katie Wignall

July 4, 2021 by ASKReviews 1 Comment

CBR13 Bingo: Machinery: So many of the abandoned buildings once housed great bits of industry — including a giant flour mill and sewage treatment plants. Best for: Anyone looking for an interesting if somewhat bleak coffee table photography book. In a nutshell: Author Wignall captures some of the haunting images of buildings abandoned throughout this giant city. Worth quoting: “The land was bought by Lendlease property developers in 2010 and the estate was demolished between 2011 and 2014. There were 284 ‘affordable homes’ (priced between […]
