Who needs a yeti?

Yetis Are the Worst! by Alex Willan

November 7, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Gilbert the Goblin is convinced yetis are not nearly as mysterious as they seem, and sets off to find one to prove once and for all that Goblins are just as cool and mysterious as the elusive yeti. (Directly stolen, I mean borrowed, from the publisher description). And you get a funny journey when Gilbert tries to do this in Yetis Are the Worst! by Alex Willan. In the same pattern as their Unicorns Are the Worst and Dragons Are the Worst, your child will […]

Do Cryptozoologists make house calls?

Sorceline by Sylvia Douyé

May 19, 2022 by BlackRaven 1 Comment

I found a snippet of Sorceline and thought it sounded good. When I found it, it took me at least three tries to start. There were several, “Wait? Did I miss something?” moments before I was able to get into the flow. This is an odd little book. There were some storyline bumps that I thought were just me, but reviewers on Goodreads agreed. I think the issue for me is that Sylvia Douyé, graphic novel was translated. And my “reading ear” sometimes has trouble […]

Dogs (and tigers and sheep and iguanas and jackalope and goldfish and krill and crocodiles and dinosaurs and unicorns…….) in Space!

Star Beasts by Stephanie Young

August 27, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Star Beasts is a fun story that Stephanie Young has created. However, due to a lot of characters you will meet (some even for a short moment), sometimes that can make things a smidgen confusing. However, this story has great potential for being the new “IT graphic novel” for ages 8 to 12. The story is if Star Trek, Firefly, and Andromeda hooked up with all the science-fi spoof and most of the animal stories, you might get something like this. And plot? All I […]

Fern has her own personality as I have mine (see image….It is SO happily me)

Nerdy Corn by Andrew Root

August 18, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Fern is a unicorn. She is creative. She prefers building robots and coding to jumping though rainbows that shimmer or splashing in waterfalls. She likes chemistry and reading. Glitter is not her thing, but she is always a good friend and willing to lend a helping hoof to help others. Still the other unicorns tease Fern and call her a Nerdy Corn. Andrew Root has taken the theme of bullies and being yourself on a slightly different journey in Nerdy Corn. Fern, when she is […]

Under and over the sea

Aquicorn Cove by Katie O’Neill.

July 24, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

cbr12bingo Cannonballer SaysMy journey to finding my Cannonballer Says was not easy. First, I wanted to read Rick by Gino. This was due to the fact narfina mentioned the word “aromantic” and who doesn’t want to see themselves portrayed in a story? Or at least see how it is portrayed? But I could not locate my readers copy. I then thought either Gender Queer (also recommended by narfina) or No Ivy League (recommend by ardaigle) but neither of my copies were around. I then […]

If you ever wanted a dragon for a pet, read this first

You Don’t Want a Dragon! by Ame Dyckman

June 30, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Did no one learn about exotic pets from You Don’t Want a Unicorn? Guess not! As the young child of that book is back and now, as you probably guessed from the title, You Don’t Want a Dragon! has wished for a pet dragon. And of course, gets it. But (like unicorns) it is not all fun and games. There is a lot of less than pleasant chores and events that take place This book is pure Ame Dyckman, therefore, how bad can it be? […]
