Why Katee Sackhoff Could Have Been the Perfect Casting Choice

December 2, 2015 by Jenny S 1 Comment

I’m a big fan of Craig Johnson and the mythical Absaroka county in Wyoming that’s he’s created to house Sheriff Walt Longmire, his friends and family, and a cast of intriguing characters both on and off the reservation. Though I picture the actors from the USA/Netflix series in my mind as I read now, this latest book really cemented for me the divergence between the books and the series and that divergence involves two main female characters—Victoria Moretti, Walt’s Undersheriff and love interest, and Cady, […]

Thank you, Beth Ellen, for gifting me an Elizabeth Hoyt I really enjoyed!

November 29, 2015 by Malin 2 Comments

St. Giles in the 1730s was one of the most impoverished areas of London. Widowed Mrs. Temperance Dews runs a children’s home for orphaned and foundling children, with the help of her younger brother, Winter Makepeace, who also tutors the boys until they’re old enough to apprentice out. Caring for nearly 30 children between infancy and nine is hard, thankless work and the siblings have trouble making ends meet. They’re in arrears on their rent and facing eviction at any moment. So when the mysterious […]

Two mysteries for the price of one

November 29, 2015 by Malin Leave a Comment

This book, which is quite long (longest audio book I’ve listened to to date) gives the readers two mysteries for the price of one. Back in 1984, three 12-year-olds went missing in the wood of a Dublin suburb. Search parties eventually found one of them, Adam Ryan, clutching a tree trunk in catatonic terror, several rips at the back of his t-shirt and his shoes filled with blood. His two friends, however, were gone without a trace. Adam didn’t remember anything since entering the wood […]

You wanted more Robin? You got it.

November 15, 2015 by narfna Leave a Comment

Oh, man, I have so many thoughts. And I’m also not entirely sure what I think about some of what happened in this book. On the one hand, I LOVED IT. The case and Robin and Strike’s personal lives dovetailed beautifully. So much of this book was character shiz, which is my favorite kind of shiz. And I’ve been saying for the past two books that I wanted MORE ROBIN and MORE ROBIN is exactly what I got. Robin backstory. Robin frontstory. Robin Robin Robin. […]

Views from a passing train

November 15, 2015 by Malin Leave a Comment

On her way by train to visit her old friend Jane Marple for Christmas, Mrs Elspeth McGillicuddy is shocked to realise that she’s witnessing a murder in the train running parallel. A tall, dark man in a dark coat is strangling a blond woman in a fur coat and there is nothing Mrs McGillicuddy can do. As soon as the train stops, she notifies the ticket inspector and the station master of what she saw, and when she arrives at Miss Marple’s, the two talk […]

An indie action-comedy-thriller starring Ram McJohnbo

November 4, 2015 by Halbs 1 Comment

Last weekend brought prime pleasure reading weather. It was rainy and chilly, and I was spending a long weekend on a ranch. In between watching San Andreas and Fury Road, I read Bryn Schurman’s Further Complications. It was the right choice for an enjoyable “beach” read. Further Complications bends genres at will. It’s funny, tense, and mysterious without taking itself too seriously. Think Pineapple Express, or pretty much any Tom Cruise movie from the 80s or 00s. Since it is has a lot of mystery […]
