What do you seek?

December 18, 2015 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

I have had this one on the bookshelf to read for quite a while and was looking for an audiobook to round out the year, so Mr. Penumbra’s is it. I struggled with my rating, vacillating between 3 and 4 stars. For me this book was uneven, in that some parts I loved, and some left me wanting more, but overall I found it a charming and delightful story, and definitely of interest to book lovers, nerds, the anyone who finds themselves in both categories. […]

Rowling and mysteries are a perfect fit

December 17, 2015 by yesknopemaybe Leave a Comment

3.5 stars. This time of year usually has me craving mysteries and I’d been meaning to get to J.K. Rowling’s pseudonymous series. The Cormoran Strike series written under the name of Robert Galbraith centers on ex-military policeman Strike and his new assistant/secretary, Robin. They’re called on to investigate the mysterious death of ultra famous supermodel, Lula Landry. Her death was officially ruled a suicide by the police months ago, but many of her friends and family just can’t believe she would choose to end her […]

Fun with guns and metal-based superpowers

December 15, 2015 by Malin 1 Comment

As of me posting this, the book is currently on sale for $2.99 on Kindle – so if you think it sounds interesting, now might be a time to try it. In helping me establish some of the background for the plot of this book, here is the Goodreads summary: In the three hundred years since the events of the Mistborn trilogy, science and technology have marched on. Scadrial is now on the verge of modernity, with railroads, electric lighting, and even the first steel-framed […]

Could you step into the shoes of your doppelganger?

December 9, 2015 by Malin 3 Comments

After a murder investigation that completely destroyed her relationship with her detective partner and best friend, Dublin murder detective Cassie Maddox moved to the Domestic Violence unit and took up target shooting to deal with her feelings of anxiety. She’s therefore surprised when her boyfriend, Sam O’Neill calls her from a murder site, and asks her to come meet him, but to make sure she wears sunglasses and a hat or some such, to disguise her appearance a bit. Once Cassie sees the victim, she […]

The girl who has survived her creator

December 8, 2015 by alwaysanswerb 4 Comments

The Girl in the Spider’s Web was okay. I didn’t have any glaring problems with it; nor was I especially blown away by it. Lagercrantz does seem to have done a good enough job capturing the spirit of the original trilogy, and his background as a crime reporter certainly prepares him for suspenseful crime thrillers — particularly ones where one of the protagonists is himself a journalist. Here’s the Goodreads summary: “Late one night, Blomkvist receives a phone call from a source claiming to have […]

Who knew intergalactic peace summits could be so entertaining?

December 2, 2015 by Malin Leave a Comment

This is the second book in the Innkeeper Chronicles. It can be read as a stand-alone, but to really get the most enjoyment out of this book, and to get a proper feel and understanding for some of the characters, you may want to read the first one, Clean Sweep and also two of the Andrews’ Edge books, Fate’s Edge and Steel’s Edge. As I did last time, I’m going to let the authors sum up the book themselves: Dina DeMille doesn’t run your typical […]
