Make Your Bed with Skipper the Seal by William H. McRaven

January 6, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Make Your Bed with Skipper the Seal are the 10 steps/points that the author William H. McRaven learned while they were a human Navy Seal.  They have spoken about them at commencements and in several books for adults. This time, with Howard McWilliam creating the cartoon illustrations, they created a picture book that talks how a seal named Skipper becomes not only the best Navy Seal, but the best Seal he could be. The idea is that the little things are important such as how […]

You had Frog and Toad, Winnie-the-Pooh, and The Wind in the Willows. Now you have Skunk and Badger

Skunk and Badger #2 Egg Marks the Spot by Amy Timberlake

July 19, 2021 by BlackRaven 2 Comments

cbr13bingo Landscape (you can see the lake if you look carefully) Skunk and Badger #2 Egg Marks the Spot by Amy Timberlake is most likely even better than the first! Our heroes, Skunk (sweet, a bit naïve, passionate, a tad inconsiderate) and Badger (gruff, scientific, hungry, a good guy) decide to take off on an adventure to replace Badger’s missing rock in his collection. Skunk leads with his heart like he always does while packing; Badger takes on the task with common sense. But both will […]

When you write over 300 words for a book that does not have one

The Fisherman & the Whale by Jessica Lanan

January 7, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

How do you write a review for a wordless picture book? Especially a 250 word one? You could start by saying that the title is The Fisherman & the Whale and is by Jessica Lanan. They are also the illustrator. Or should say this book is by Lanan period. It was published in May of 2019. And it was a pretty wild ride. The wordlessness is usually the first thing that turns me off on a book. Yet, there are a handful of books that […]

Just too darn cute! Read it!

The Word for Friend by Aidan Cassie

October 2, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Just too darn cute! Read it! Okay, I need to write more. But The Word for Friend is really just too darn cute. Aidan Cassie created a story where language barriers does not mean friendship barriers. Kemala the pangolin is excited for her new city, home and school. She is a happy, talkative little girl (pangolin) and it is not until she gets to school that things change. She does not know anyone. And more importantly, nobody speaks her language. How is she going to […]

Lloyd Finds His Whalesong by Skylaar Amann

July 6, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

What book was going to be my cbr12bingo Music block? Though I could not remember the title right off, I knew a book about a whale I had read would be perfect. After bugging a coworker to 1) read it and 2) tell me the title I found it. The background to the book is almost as fun. as the book itself. As I said, after I had found this book that had caught my eye because of its lovely blue cover, that allowed me […]

“My cuddle-bunny is hogging the bed!”

Boris and the Worrisome Wakies by Helen Lester

December 3, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Lynn Munsinger’s signature illustrations are marvelous in Boris and the Worrisome Wakies. Helen Lester’s voice is there but the story is a bit more modern than some of her more classic stories (instead of the parents making sure the child is made to go to sleep, the child is allowed to do whatever he wants). The quirk of having badgers go to school at night and sleep during the day (as badgers do) is a nice touch. The story is simple: Boris has all the […]
