This is my third time participating in the Cannonball Read and until now there has been only one non-fiction review, so it was easy to choose what genre was “not my wheelhouse” for CBR10 Bingo. As my ten year old daughter is reading I Am Malala, and I’m trying to read what she is reading, this was a perfect fit. Before reading this book, I had very little knowledge of Malala beyond she was an advocate of girls education and had survived an attack from the Taliban. Malala […]
Another take on Malala
Free as a Bird: The Story of Malala is a younger version of the Malala Yousafzai story. It is tastefully done for this audience. However, the timeline in the back only goes to 2015. The last few years of her life are not mentioned. Lina Maslo’s text and illustrations are pleasant and eye-catching. Yet, there is nothing new here. The facts have been told in other books. Such as in Malala’s Magic Pencil, Malala: Activist for Girls’ Education and Malala, a Brave Girl from Pakistan/Iqbal, a […]
“We realize the importance of our voices only when we are silenced.”
Malala Yousafzai and her struggle for education for women in Pakistan was launched into the international spotlight when she was shot in the head by the Taliban and survived. I Am Malala is her story of growing up in a Pakistan that slowly morphed into a unrecognizable country under an religious extremist government. When the Taliban moved into Pakistan they began severely limiting the rights of women, preferring them to be neither seen or heard and disallowing girls from going to school. Malala is a typical girl […]
I Am Malala
Going into reading this, I thought that I knew Malala’s story and that I would be reading about how her experience with the Taliban made her who she is today. I thought that the fact that Malala was a girl who was shot by the Taliban is what she was known for. I was surprised to learn that this was not the case. She was speaking out for the rights of everyone to receive an education before she was shot, and was one of the reasons […]
Malala’s Story
*I’m deeply ashamed to say that I read this something like a month ago and have been sitting on this review for awhile. The end of semester has hit me hard, and reading has been way easier than reviewing. So, you’ll be seeing a lot from me tonight…* I remember hearing about a young teenager who was shot in the face by the Taliban, survived, and went on to become a global advocate for women’s education in countries oppressed by extremist religious regimes. It felt […]
“We realize the importance of our voices only when we are silenced.”
Malala Yousafzai is an extraordinary young lady — brave, intelligent, well-spoken and determined to provide the basic human right of education to as many people as possible. She also likes to read the Twilight books and do her hair. I am Malala does an incredible job of introducing not just the activist Malala, but the real person as well. “Education is education. We should learn everything and then choose which path to follow.” Education is neither Eastern nor Western, it is human.” Yes, Malala is the […]
