Book Didn’t Address Some Key Plot Points

Love, Heather by Laurie Petrou

September 24, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

Please note that I received this book via NetGalley. This did not affect my rating or review. Trigger warnings: Transphobia and sexual assault. So this book I thought was a very good look at how bullying can lead to actions that none of us would like to see happening in high schools today. The main character Stevie is being raised by her mother in a small town in Canada. Her father has left some time ago (the timeline issue I had will be discussed further below) […]

My little pups are waiting for me over the rainbow bridge

The Rainbow Bridge by Adrian Raeside

September 23, 2019 by kfishgirl 3 Comments

So unfortunately I’m reviewing The Rainbow Bridge again!  I reviewed it last year for my Two Heads are Better than One square when I lost my Ernie.  Now I’m doing a repeat for my Two Heads are Better than One square this year because I lost my Oscar. It’s never easy to lose a dog (unless you’re a MONSTER).  I feel like it’s even harder when you have to share your loss with two little girls who don’t know life without him.  Oscar was my […]

Beautiful and Tragic

Exit West by Mohsin Hamid

April 17, 2019 by thewheelbarrow Leave a Comment

I chose to read this book because I saw it on the to-read list of a baseball player I really like, Sean Doolittle.  Doolittle is a very good player and someone who is known for being an even better person.  He is also considered one of the most, let’s say intellectual, players in baseball and maybe sports as a whole.  He attended the University of Virginia, in my home state, so I’ve always felt an affinity for Doolittle.  He posted a picture of his current […]

Anger and Hate Poured Onto the Page

The Crow-Special Edition by James O'Barr

March 29, 2019 by MarkAbaddon 1 Comment

Have you ever lost someone you loved? I don’t mean a friend or a relative, I mean losing someone so deeply ingrained into you that when they are gone, you have no idea how you are able to function? For those of us who have, James O’Barr has taken those feelings of rage, of dis-empowerment, and allowed us some catharsis through his seminal work The Crow. For those unfamiliar with the tale from either the movie or the graphic novel, The Crow tells the story […]

She asks how you make friends in a big school. He thinks about it.

Love by Hanne Orstavik

This is an odd little book that I am not sure whether or not I really liked. But it did have some very incredibly well done narrative tension, and I think could translate well to a certain (faithful) film version if done the right way. The story, as such there is, is about Vibeke and her son Jon. Tomorrow is Jon’s birthday, but Vibeke has forgotten. This first miscommunication sets the tone and plot for the whole novel. Vibeke begins the novel in a kind […]

Groovy kind of love

Pete the Cat's Groovy Guide to Love by James Dean

January 7, 2019 by BlackRaven 2 Comments

I probably should not admit to this, but I am not a Pete the Cat fan. I know I am in the minority there as James Dean’s books fly off our selves at work. There seems to be one for every holiday. We even had a plush Pete doll before the holidays this year. Therefore, I must admit I was not expecting a lot from Pete the Cat’s Groovy Guide to Love. I thought perhaps it might be a fun Valentine’s Day gift for a […]
