Gyo Fujikawa drew some babies and made history

It Began with a Page: How Gyo Fujikawa Drew the Way by Kyo Maclear

April 25, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I have read It Began with a Page: How Gyo Fujikawa Drew the Way before. However, I had forgotten what a gem Kyo Maclear’s story was. Therefore, it was like finding it all over again. Once reading, I remembered a few things, but new information came to light. We know Gyo Fujikawa for her babies of all colors. But this was not always the case. She, along with a select few, decided to put diverse characters in their images. Yet, in the 1960s, this did […]

One bada$$ Girl!

Girl on a Motorcycle by Amy Novesky

December 7, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Girl on a Motorcycle is a poetic look at the strength one woman, Anne-France Dautheville, had have to beat the odds and find a place (or in this case the world) she was most happy. Anne-France wanted to find a place where she belonged and was able to be free. This is the true story of Dautheville, who was the first woman to ride a motorcycle around the world. Each place she goes (flying to Canada first, heading to Alaska, Japan, and other nations) has […]

I like these books. Will you try them?

Ninja Boy’s Secret by Tina Schneider

Time is a Flower by Julie Morstad

October 20, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Two books found their way onto my work desk the other day. One was Ninja Boy’s Secret by Tina Schneider and the other Time is a Flower by Julie Morstad. Both are picture books, but that is where most of the similarities end. The other two comparisons one can make are both have unique and interesting illustrations, and both have nice messages. I am giving Ninja Boy’s Secret a 4.5 because the illustrations were not completely “my thing” They are lovely, but the simplistic nature […]

Gyo Fujikawa Drew her way into our hearts

It Began with a Page: How Gyo Fujikawa Drew the Way by Kyo Maclear

July 29, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

It Began with a Page: How Gyo Fujikawa Drew the Way by Kyo Maclear and illustrated by Julie Morstad is a different picture book. It is a picture book about someone who fought not only to be seen themselves, but for others to be seen too. In the 1920’s Gyo Fujikawa did what few women and even fewer Japanese people did: she went to college. She did what few people in the 1960’s did: she put pictures of all races of babies on the same page in […]

Dreams of an Extraordinary Life.

The Dress and the Girl by Camille Andros

August 8, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

In The Dress and the Girl by Camille Andros a young girl dreams of having an extraordinary life. While wearing her favorite dress her mother made her, she goes and enjoys the simple life of her village: watching the sunset, doing chores, picking flowers, going to school, playing and riding in wagons. One day, her family takes a special trip. They are emigrating to a new country. And while the girl and dress still play and go to school, instead of a wagon they are […]

Take the World by Storm

Bloom: A Story of Fashion Designer Elsa Schiaparelli by Kyo Maclear

July 6, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

This was such a “Wow!” book for me. I did not know the fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli, though I am somewhat familiar with the style of her time. A style that she helped create. Again, in this day of looking for books to inspire girls to go out and try (especially when they are told they should not because of their economic status, it is “unlady like” or they are not “fill in the blank”) this is another to add to the list. However, some […]
